Psychology is one of the largest and most popular fields of study at UHCL. Faculty teaching and research approaches range from psychophysiological to developmental to behavioral. Current faculty research areas include parental socialization of children at risk and psychological issues related to interpersonal violence, family relationships. Research with a specific focus on women's psychology includes women's roles at work and at home, body size and self-esteem, and battering in gay and lesbian couples.
Our successful graduates enter a variety of professions. Graduates in general psychology, work in human services organizations and industry, as junior college instructors, and as research assistants. Other graduates are simply interested in enriching their understanding of human behavior and continue their careers in other fields. A number of graduates go on to further higher education to pursue masters' or doctoral degrees.
The rich ethnic diversity of the Houston-Galveston area is a strength of UHCL's Psychology program. The department's commitment to increase students' knowledge of a cultural/ethnic context while teaching core psychology principles enriches those who attend classes at UHCL. This website provides specific information about our faculty (both teaching and research) as well as more general information about our program and the types of students who flourish here at UHCL.
