Egypt 2006 Trip Photos & Quotes Egypt was my trip of self-discovery We have a welcome reception at the hotel when we arrive. Hum...did I just fly fifteen hours and thousands of miles? After meeting several Cairo University students, I feel as if I could sit and talk all night... What a warm welcome we received. It happened! I was in Egypt at the Great Pyramids. I had transformed from student and tourist into a whole other person who now got the global picture of what was happening in the world. While inside the mosque the Imam said a prayer for our group. I think my hear skipped a beat and I goose bumps when he prayed for us. I was unsure of what to expect and how I would get along with these strangers. This experience for me has been one where I have learned not only about another society but also about myself and the direction I want to take with my life. Meeting with Dr. Shallama Skaher, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Americans and Former Egyptian Ambassador to Canada, was an incredible honor and privilege. I was living in a bubble and not considering that the rest of the world was affected by the attack on American soil on September 11th. Meeting so many Egyptians has not only provided me with contacts, but has personalized the war in Iraq, the perpetuation of terrorist stereotyping, the myths and lies associated with Islam and Jihad, and so many other topics. I feel empowered to act on this knowledge after my trip. At 4:15pm we heard our first call to prayer. It sounded beautiful and awe inspiring. Creating bridges involves in part a willingness to receive constructive criticism. I wonder, just how willing most Americans are to reflect on the impact United States' policies have on the lives of people in Egypt and the Middle East. | Statue of Pharaoh Ramses II in Memphis, Egypt |
