Graduate Admissions

Graduate students seeking a degree in Psychology should:

  1. Go to the Office of Admissions to apply to the University (before being admitted to the psychology program)

·         Note: Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their last 60 hours of undergraduate course work. No GRE is required for these students.

·         Applicants who do NOT have a 3.0 GPA as stated above must take the GRE and submit their scores for consideration into the psychology program.

  1. Once you are admitted to UHCL, you will declare your major as Behavioral Science-Psychology.

  2. After you are designated as a Behavioral Science-Psychology graduate student, the Advising office (for Human Sciences and Humanities) will assign you to a faculty advisor.

·         Your faculty advisor will review your curriculum plan of study with you and can provide information about course selection and career planning.

Behavioral Sciences-Psychology

Master of Arts

The graduate program in Behavioral Sciences leads to the Master of Arts Degree.  The program is a vehicle for advanced study of human behavior.  Course work is taken primarily in psychology, but with faculty permission appropriate course work in the behavioral sciences may be allowed.  Applicants should have strong undergraduate preparation in the Behavioral Sciences; those with less than 12 upper-level hours are required to take additional undergraduate course work at UHCL.

36-42 Hour & Professional Master’s Programs – Two Levels of Study in Behavioral Sciences:

The Master’s Degree curricula are available to graduate students in Behavioral Sciences at two levels; the 36-42 hour General programs and the Professional programs.

GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAMS

The 36-42 hour Psychology program is designed for students wishing to teach at the community college level or planning to pursue a doctoral program at another institution. The 42-hour Applied Behavior Analysis Sub-plan within the M.A. Psychology Program is designed to prepare students to provide behavioral services to individuals with developmental disabilities as Board Certified Behavior Analysts.

Students will NOT be qualified to be licensed as Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) after concluding the 36-42 hour program.

The 21-hour Applied Behavior Analysis Certificate Program is designed for individuals who have already earned a master’s degree in Psychology or a related discipline and who would like to complete the coursework and practicum required to sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst exam.

PROFESSIONAL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAMS

The Professional programs, which range from 60 to 66 hours, are designed for students wishing to pursue a clinically focused Master’s degree.  The areas available under this option include Family Therapy, Clinical Psychology and School Psychology.  These are described in greater detail in a separate brochure and have a separate admission process with specific application deadlines and admit only for fall semesters.

All programs require application to the university.

ADVISING

Assignment of an Advisor:

Upon admission, copies of the student's completed application and transcripts are forwarded by the Office of Admissions to the Advising Office.  Upon receipt of these materials, the student is assigned a faculty advisor.  The student's file must be completed before an advisor can be assigned.
