UH-Clear Lake offers transfer scholarships

Local community college students and students transferring from other universities can take the next step in their college career and receive some financial help by attending University of Houston-Clear Lake. New first-time undergraduate students at UH-Clear Lake may be eligible for the Automatic Transfer Scholarships to finish their degrees.

“This program is unique,” explains Executive Director of Financial Aid Lynda McKendree about the new scholarship program at UH-Clear Lake. “The majority of our scholarships are given to continuing students, who apply for established scholarships through standard scholarship procedures.

“This new scholarship program is automatic, meaning no additional applications or forms to completed, and both full- and part-time undergraduate students will qualify based on their transfer GPAs.”

Students must be eligible for in-state tuition. Those with a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average, registered in nine or more semester credit hours will receive $500 per semester. Additionally, unlike most automatic scholarships at other universities that exclude students with grade point averages under 3.00, students with a 2.75-2.99 cumulative grade point average, registered in nine or more hours will receive $400 per semester.

“UH-Clear Lake’s transfer scholarship program is not typical of most scholarship programs,” says UH-Clear Lake Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Yvette Bendeck. “Our transfer scholarships are renewable, providing students with financial assistance for four long semesters, excluding summer sessions.”

An upper-level university, UH-Clear Lake offers bachelor’s degree in more than 30 fields of study to students who transfer in during the junior year. All those applying to the university must have a minimum of 54 semester hours of college credit with grades of “C” or better. Other requirements include taking the THEA/TASP examination or showing college readiness according to the provisions of the Texas Success Initiative and UH-Clear Lake; eligibility to return immediately to the last institution attended; completion of college algebra or a higher mathematics course; and completion of Composition I and II with a grade of “C-“ or better.

To take advantage of this scholarship offer, all students have to do is apply to UH-Clear Lake by visiting http://www.uhcl.edu/scholarships/transfer and choosing the “Apply to UHCL Now” hyperlink. Applicants will be automatically considered for transfer scholarships. For more information, contact an enrollment management counselor, 281-283-2500.
