Workshop offers money management tips

No matter if the economy is booming or sluggish, proper money management is always important and the University of Houston-Clear Lake Center for Advanced Management Programs’ “Successful Money Management” course can help. The three-evening workshop will be held July 8, 15 and 22, 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., in UH-Clear Lake’s Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Attendees of this program not only will learn more effective ways to manage their money but also will discover new investment strategies. This seminar introduces participants to useful concepts for managing money such as how to minimize taxes, maximize return-on-investment and create future financial security. Certified Financial Planner Michael W. Hesse, president of Texas Wealth Management, leads the session.

Teachers learn to integrate writing in the classroom

Secondary school teachers who are looking for ways to increase the writing their students do within their specific field of study may be interested in taking University of Houston-Clear Lake’s “Calculations, Creatures and Canyons: Writing in the Content Areas” July 18.

This five-hour hands-on class will demonstrate to teachers how they can increase students’ overall comprehension by writing. Participants will work in content areas groups for discussion of mentor texts to use as models for students’ writing.

Teachers can earn five continuing education units from this course, which will be held in the university’s Arbor Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The $50 fee covers a lunch break. For more information, call 281-283-3530 or e-mail youngj@uhcl.edu.

UH-Clear Lake Neumann Library offers exhibit

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Neumann Library invites all to visit an exhibit focusing on human creativity and intellect. “Cultural Literacy is the Foundation of Education” includes posters, books and videos that are sure to stir some thought.

This collection will be on display through the summer Mondays-Thursdays, 8 a.m. – Midnight; Fridays, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. There is no charge to visit this exhibit. Friends of the Neumann Library memberships are available to those wishing to check out books. For more information, call 281-283-3900.

Film series features “Young@Heart”

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Film and Speaker Series presents the documentary "Young@Heart“ Saturday, July 19, 7 p.m. This feel-good film features a group of Massachusetts seniors who begin performing contemporary and classic rock music.

The July 19 showing will be held in the Student Services and Classroom Building’s Lecture Hall, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Tickets cost $3.50. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Office of Student Life at 281-283-2560 or e-mail movies@uhcl.edu.

Employee selection, appraisal skills explored

Business professionals can get tips on staff selection and appraisal skills during a special, two-day University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Advanced Management Programs workshop on July 24-25.

“Employee Selection & Appraisal” will center on demonstrating to attendees how to implement selection process procedures as well as how to conduct effective performance appraisals. The program will take place in UHCL’s Bayou Building from 8 am. – 4 p.m. The cost of the seminar is $595 per person and team discounts are available. Teachers learn more about gifted students

“Nature & Needs of the Gifted,” hosted by the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Educational Programs, examines both the positive and negative characteristics of gifted and talented students. This program, which will be offered on July 18, provides an opportunity for educators to learn more about the traits of gifted children and the cultural influences of race and poverty on these students.

Teachers can earn six clock hours of credit toward required training hours of educators who have gifted students in their classroom. The course fee is $40 for Southeast Co-op members and $60 for all others. This workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in UHCL’s Arbor Building.
