Undergraduate Admission Requirements
Bachelor of Applied Science
Required associate degree or semester credit hours
You may be admitted into a Bachelor of Applied Science program if you have completed one of the following admissions options:
- Associate of Applied Science degree in a discipline closely related to the Bachelor of Applied Science program of interest, or
- 54 semester credit hours of college credit with a GPA of 2.0 or better from a regionally accredited institution

Associate of Applied Science degree option
We offer five Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degrees, each of which requires an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in specific disciplines. If you are interested in:
- BAS in Healthcare Services, you must have an AAS in Allied Health or a related field
- BAS in Early Childhood Program Leadership, you must have an AAS in Early Childhood or a similar discipline
- BAS in Educator of Young Children, you must have an AAS in Early Childhood or a similar discipline
- BAS in Young Children with Disabilities, you must have AAS in Early Childhood or a similar discipline
- BAS in Information Technology, you must have an AAS in Information Technology or a similar discipline
In addition, you must also meet the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement and be eligible to return to the last institution attended.
Semester credit hours option
If you have earned at least 54 semester credit hours and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher the following is also required:
- Composition I with a C- or better
- Composition II or Technical Writing with a C- or better
- College Algebra or higher mathematics course
- TSI met
- Eligible to return to the last institution attended
- For any BAS early childhood education program - at least 12 semester credit hours in early childhood coursework; for the BAS in healthcare services program at least 12 semester credit hours in an allied healthcare related field; and for the BAS in Information Technology – 3 semester credit hours in an introductory statistics course.
Selecting a Bachelor of Applied Science in the admissions application
If you are interested in applying to any of these programs, look for the following options in the admissions application under each of the schools:
- For the BAS in Healthcare Services, select Healthcare Services–BAS found under the School of Business listing
- For the BAS in Early Childhood Program Leadership, select Early Childhood–BAS under the School of Education listing
- For the BAS in Educator of Young Children, select Educator of Young Children–BAS under the School of Education listing
- For the BAS in Young Children with Disabilities, select Young Children with Disabilities–BAS under the School of Education listing
- For the BAS in Information Technology, select Information Technology – BAS found under the School of Science and Computer Engineering listing
Tests
TSI
You must complete the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirement prior to enrolling. You can meet this requirement by passing all three sections of the THEA/TASP exam or by exemption.
TOEFL
If you were born or educated in a country where English is not the native language, you must demonstrate English proficiency by taking the TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson Test of English (PTE) or by successfully completing the ELS Intensive English program. To be admitted, you must meet one of the following minimum score requirements: 550 on the paper exam of the TOEFL, with section scores of at least 50; 79 on the iBT TOEFL; 6.0 on the IELTS, 53 on the PTE exam or you can successfully complete level 112 in the ELS Intensive English program. Your scores cannot be more than two years old and can only be accepted if received from the testing center. See other ways you may qualify for a waiver.
Other Admission Options
Early admission
To qualify for early admission, you must be currently enrolled in the appropriate number of course credits that when added to your completed coursework, total 54 semester credit hours and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Composition I and the appropriate math course must be completed with a C- or better. You may be currently enrolled in Composition II or Technical Writing. To prevent cancellation of admission/registration and loss of financial aid, courses in progress must be completed with a C- or better, posted to the transcript and received by our admissions office prior to the first day of class.
Concurrent enrollment
Applicants for concurrent enrollment are students completing lower-level courses at another institution who desire simultaneous enrollment at UHCL. You may be approved for admission if the following requirements are met:
- Completion of 45 semester credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
- Concurrently enrolled for resident credit at another regionally accredited institution during each semester of concurrent enrollment at UHCL. A current, paid fee statement from the other institution's records office must be submitted as verification of enrollment prior to registration at UHCL.
- Completion of the English, math and TSI requirements as stated above.
Students who are admitted under concurrent enrollment will not be eligible for financial aid and are limited to taking 12 semester credit hours at UHCL in this status.
Transient
An undergraduate student who enrolls at UHCL as a transient will not be required to meet the English or math requirement. However, all other admission criteria must be met. Enrollment under this option is limited to one semester and you are not eligible for financial aid.
Admission as a summer transient is limited to six semester credit hours and terminates at the end of the summer sessions. Applicants for summer transient status must meet the following requirements:
- Completion of 30 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0
- TSI compliance
- Eligible to return to the last institution attended
If you choose to become a degree-seeking student at UHCL, you must meet all admission requirements, reapply for admission and pay a new application processing fee.
