Network with alumni in your areaIn addition to lifelong learning and creating business connections, UHCL alumni also desire to catch up with former classmates. To give alumni a chance to build their relationships, the UHCL Alumni Association hosts events called 'AlumNights,' casual networking events that allow alumni to mix and mingle in a relaxed setting. These events are also a great way for alumni to celebrate their latest accomplishments with their alma mater. This is certainly the case with Dorothy Hagan, '89 BA, who will be hosting a presentation, reception and book signing for her novel, "The Offshore Triumphs of Karla Jean," on Tuesday, May 8, 5:30-7 p.m. in the university's Bayou Building, Atrium I and Garden Room.

Since beginning these events in 2009, AlumNights have proven to be successful; so successful, in fact, that many area businesses and organizations have offered to host their own UHCL AlumNight. Two such businesses are Edgewater Community-Coventry Homes and Main Event Entertainment. Gather at the Coventry Homes model within the Edgewater Community (100 Water Street, Webster) with your fellow alumni on Tuesday, May 22, 5-7 p.m., for a fun reception and networking event. And stay tuned for more information on an upcoming AlumNight at Main Event Entertainment.

If you are interested in hosting an AlumNight event and promoting your business to your fellow UHCL alumni, please visit the AlumNight webpage or contact Mindi Funderburg, coordinator of outreach and communications for the Office of Alumni and Community Relations, at 281-283-2041 or funderburg@uhcl.edu.

Two Student Exhibitions Open This Month

Two student exhibitions open this monthIt's mid-April, and you know what that means for students: lots of studying, taking exams, and turning in final projects as the academic year comes to a close. This time is especially rewarding for many seeking degrees in the arts, as they get to show off their semester's best work in end-of-year exhibitions. UHCL Bachelor of Fine Arts students are no exception; you can see their works beginning tomorrow, April 16. Thirty-two works from 11 artists are on exhibit through May 17 in the Bayou Building's exhibition area on the second level of Atrium I. The public is invited to celebrate the students' achievements during a free opening reception on April 26, 5-8 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Those planning on attending are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook. The artists featured in the "UHCL Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition 2012" are Lakita Costner, Angela Crane, Stephanie Flier, Sarah Fowler, Corey Beth LaBuff, Erica Moses, Lindsay Rosenhagen, Michael St. Amand, Laurie Vincent, Kristy Watt and Zachary Yeager. It was juried by Aleksandar Mladenovic, assistant professor in the Printmaking Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Arts in Belgrade, Serbia.

Also opening this month, The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake (TAACCL) in partnership with University of Houston-Clear Lake presents the "12th Annual Houston Area Community College Student Art Exhibition." Juried by Contemporary Arts Museum Houston curator Dean Daderko, the exhibition includes two-dimensional and three-dimensional media that provides a broad scope of artistic themes prevalent among community college students today. The public is invited to a free reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, April 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at TAACCL, 2000 NASA Parkway, Nassau Bay, Texas. The reception will be preceded by an artists' talk at 5:30 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibition, Daderko will lead a juror's luncheon at noon on Wednesday, May 16. During this informal talk at TAACCL, a free lunch will be provided to each attendee who RSVPs on Eventbrite by May 14. Visit http://curatorsluncheon.eventbrite.com to register. Attendees are asked to bring their tickets to the event.

Join UHCL alumnus and NASA astronaut Michael E. Fossum, '97 MS, at the upcoming "Small Talk. Fossum served as Mission Specialist for STS-121 in 2006 and again on STS-124 in 2008, flying on board Space Shuttle Discovery each mission. He accrued more than 636 hours in space during his two missions, which included critical return-to-flight procedures to increase safety in spaceflight. Fossum returned to space in June 2011 aboard the Russian spacecraft Soyuz en route to the International Space Station. He was named commander of Expedition 29 in September of that same year and spent a total of six months on the ISS, returning to earth in November 2011. During his latest mission on the ISS, Fossum logged more than 66 million miles in space.

Sign up and enjoy a breakfast conversation with Fossum to learn more on life in space. He is one of the scheduled conversationalists for the UHCL Alumni Association’s breakfast event "Small Talk. Big Ideas. Breakfast with an Expert," Tuesday, April 17, 7:30-9 a.m. in UHCL's Bayou Building, Forest Room. It is only a few days away so reserve your seat today!
