Exhibition of Woodcuts by Serbian Artist Opens Sept. 13

UHCL Offers Free Art-Making Activity at Bay Area Art Walk on July 14On Thursday, Sept. 13, 5-7 p.m., the UHCL Art Gallery will host a reception in celebration of the fall exhibition, which features work by Serbian printmaker Slobodan Radojković. As always, admission to the reception is free and refreshments will be provided. The selection of recent woodcuts marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. His latest body of work focuses on the motif of the pipe. Native Americans were the first to smoke tobacco from pipes and it is continued to be used by tribes in sacred rituals. For Radojković, the pipe takes on a greater sentimental connection, evoking memories of home and a calmer, more relaxing time, and, for this reason, he has dedicated this series of prints to his father. Formally, the works consist of vibrant, contrasting hues, achieved by pressing several different color inked blocks to produce the final work in a process called polychrome woodblock printing. Radojković was born in 1967 in Niŝ, Serbia. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje (Macedonia) in 1992 and completed his postgraduate studies in the Graphic Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1996. Radojković currently works at the Gallery of Contemporary Fine Arts Niŝ as the graphic workshop coordinator. His exhibition at the UHCL Art Gallery is on view Sept. 13 – Nov. 8, 2012.

In other news, September marks the gallery's participation in its third Bay Area Art Walk. Join artists Patrick Renner and Marisa Miller on Sept. 8, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., for a free art-making activity located at Nassau Bay Town Square (at the intersection of Saturn Lane and Space Park Drive). Check out the UHCL Art Gallery Facebook page to view a video of their project for the July Art Walk. Every Art Walk brings a different art-making activity, and the one in September will be even more fun!

Preparing for a Job Fair

UHCL Offers Free Art-Making Activity at Bay Area Art Walk on July 14With the UHCL Gulf Coast Job Fair on the horizon, the Office of Career Services thought it would be appropriate to discuss preparing for a career fair, and, trust us, they've seen it all. From Sponge Bob pajama pants to an employer inviting a student to an on-site interview, here are a few tips and tricks to navigate through networking.

Organization: Before you attend any job fair, know what you’re getting into. Note if the job fair is open to all majors or if there is registration process. Review the list of attending employers. Don't exclude or omit a company because you don't know who they are or what they do. A quick Google search can work wonders. If at any time during your research you discover there are position openings at a company that will be in attendance at the job fair, apply. That way, during the career fair, you can demonstrate your preparedness and enthusiasm for the position. Create a list of employers that you would like to target at the job fair. Keeping in mind relevancy of your major, the Office of Career Services recommends prioritizing companies and organizations in order from the ones you are most interested in and so on. Evaluate the companies and organizations at the end of your list and visit a few of those tables first. This way, you can settle your nerves and process some of the questions the employers throw at you. As you navigate to the "top" of your list, you will feel more confident and find it easier to interact with employers.

Readiness: One of two of the most popular questions that Career Services receives is, "Do I need to bring a résumé?" The answer is yes. Absolutely prepare a resume or something that you can exchange with an employer, even a simple business card. The research you do on the attending list of employers can have a great impact on the formatting and content of your résumé. The more you can tailor your résumé to a position or a hiring company, the more chances you will have in making a connection with them. Plugging in the language used in the job description or using industry norms throughout your résumé is also a way to stand out through the masses of other qualified candidates. For example, a computer science major should include their "Programming Languages" or experience with "Operating Systems" in a "Technical Skills" section of their résumé.

The second most popular question that Career Services receives is, "Do I have to dress up?" Unless you"re headed to the beach, to be over-dressed is always better than to be underdressed. Keep in mind, this is the first impression you are making on a potential employer; make sure you’re not remembered as that "person in the SpongeBob pajama pants." For all job seekers, professional attire is highly recommended.

Strategy: The most important piece of the career fair navigation is the verbal (and non-verbal) communication you have with an employer. Plan and prepare the message you would like to convey to the employer, why you're interested and what you know/value about them as a company or organization. Positively approach an individual and introduce yourself with a handshake and smile. Use an opening based on the current social setting and attempt to end your introduction with a question, while maintaining flow of conversation. Maintain eye contact because it shows you're sincerely interested in the person and the conversation topic. Be attentive to the flow of the conversations. If they ask to see your résumé, show it. If they do not, wait for an appropriate time to offer it to them. Ask for business cards and engage in a follow-up plan (i.e. "I will follow-up with you next Monday after I apply.")

The easiest way to navigate a career fair is to be ready for it. Please visit the UHCL Office of Career Services to assist you in all of your job preparation needs, and come see us at the Gulf Coast Job Fair on Thursday, Sept. 27 from 1:30-4 p.m. in the UHCL Bayou Building, Atrium I and II.

Did you know that Jill Hickman '95 helps make women the key to success in business?

Did you know that Sallie Helms '94 was presented the Houston Woman's Magazine “HER” Award? Alumna Jill Hickman '95 can see into the future and knows what women can do today to make their own futures better and brighter.

With a mass exodus predicted from the workplace in the next 15 years, all signs point to a new look on the future face of leadership with more and more women moving into these top-level positions. Unfortunately, too few organizations are well prepared for this change and will be at a loss to manage the profound impact from this leadership shift.

To help better identify and create these opportunities, Hickman created Jill Hickman Companies. Established in 1998, Jill Hickman Companies provides organizations and entrepreneurs with a complete talent development and management solution for both small businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Hickman helps companies identify the economic drivers paving the need for change and how businesses can prepare themselves for future success with the number one resource in their talent pool: women! Closer to home, Jill Hickman Companies provides coaching and consulting services to local business owners and leaders throughout Texas, hosting women’s leadership advisory boards, retreats and special events. As founder of The Women's Leadership Advisory Board, Hickman focuses her time and attention to inspire, educate and elevate women to leadership success.

A native Houstonian, Hickman received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and teaching certification in English and Psychology from University of Texas and a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management from University of Houston-Clear Lake, as well as a teaching certification in marketing from the University of Houston.

Hickman feels that along with the need for corporate strategy change, women have personal responsibility to prepare and position themselves for successful leadership. To that end, she has recently published My Success Journal, which helps women chronicle their own steps to success through specific exercises and personal insight.

On Sept. 18, Jill Hickman will host a presentation and reception in the UHCL Bayou Building, Garden Room and Atrium I from 5-9 p.m. on the UHCL campus. Join her as she describes the journey behind the journal's creation, the story of how it was developed and the reasons for creating it. She will guide guests through an exercise provided within the journal, highlighting the benefits of journaling and guests will have the opportunity to ask questions about the journal, its exercises and the author. After the presentation, Hickman will be available to sign copies of My Success Journal. The event is free to attend and copies of My Success Journal will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds to benefit UHCL's Women's Studies Program. Light refreshments will be served.
