Speaking of events, the UHCL Art Gallery has a couple of fun programs coming up. On Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m., join other art fans for an evening of contemporary art and dance. Dominic Walsh Dance Theater will present a dance production specially choreographed by Dominic Walsh in response to the works featured in the exhibition Inner Space, Global Matter: Recording from the Structures Within | Geraldine Ondrizek – Works from 2008 through 2012. Registration is free on dwdtperformance.eventbrite.com. On Thursday, Feb. 7, 5-7 p.m., the UHCL Art Gallery hosts a free opening reception for two solo exhibitions featuring the works of Vojtěch Aubrecht and Miro Švolík, on exhibition the Bayou Building, Atrium I, Level 2. Both artists are faculty members at International Art Consortium institutions: Aubrecht is professor of photography at the Institute of Art and Design at the University of West Bohemia in Plzen, Czech Republic, and Švolík is head of the creative photography studio at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. Free parking for both events is available in the Visitor Lot or Lot D. Hope to see you here!

Pictured is dada artist Marcel Duchamp‘s “L.H.O.O.Q.” from 1919. Dada is often described as irreverent, nonsensical, anti-art. Another of Duchamp’s works, “The Fountain,”  was the influence behind the 2011 UHCL art car.

UHCL alumni make a difference in the community and in the world every day. Brandy Gates, '98 BBA, '04 MBA, is one of many. Brandy is serving as chair of the American Heart Association's Bay Area Go Red for Women Luncheon this year.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. Funds raised by the event help the American Heart Association fund life-saving research and promote women's heart health awareness. Brandy chooses to "Go Red" because of the history of heart disease in her family. "I firmly believe that it is our duty as women and mothers to educate this generation and future generations on the importance of taking care of yourself—beginning with your heart," she says.

The 2013 Bay Area Go Red for Women Luncheon will take place on Friday, Feb. 22 at South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center. All are invited to join Brandy in honoring, protecting and celebrating the hearts of those you love. To learn more about the Bay Area Go Red for Women Luncheon and find out how you can help, visit the event site.

February is National Heart Month and no matter where you live, you can make a difference. Each year, on the first Friday in February, millions of women and men come together to wear red, take action and commit to fighting this deadly disease. Visit www.heart.org to educate yourself on heart healthy living, share heart healthy tips with friends and even download the tools to organize a "wear red" initiative in your workplace.

In February, and every month, UHCL alumni share their heart in the community. Thank you for all you do to make our world a better place.
