Spring Session Thursday, January 10, 20088:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. International Student Orientation – A day long orientation that provides specific topics and information to assist international students in their transition to the U.S. and UHCL. For more information contact the office of Intercultural and International Student Services at 281-283-2575 or visit http://prtl.uhcl.edu/international/programs/international_orientation. Programs and activities are offered to promote cultural pluralism and to help meet the academic, cultural and personal needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds and first generation students. The office also provides advocacy and support to all students. Programs and services are available at no cost to any UHCL student. For more information about these programs, visit our Web sites.• National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) – A diversity program offered to all students, staff and faculty. The alliance works together to create a welcoming environment for all groups.Celebrating Our Elders (COE) – A scholarship project that builds partnerships among the university, Houston-area high schools, area community colleges and the Hispanic and African-American communities to further educational opportunities. Women’s and LGBT Services – Provides programs and services that serve the constituencies’ needs and address issues relevant to women and LGBT communities. Academic & Retention – Outreach programs that provide resources to students:Make the Connection – a tutoring resource Total Success Plus – a mentoring resource Strictly Speaking – a student mentoring program designed to enhance English speaking skills Student Advocacy – IISS provides support and advocacy to all student organizations that promote a variety of educational, cultural and diverse programs IISS staff members serve as advocates to students seeking support during various situations where they must work through the university system.Cultural Programming – A variety of cultural, ethnic and diverse programs and events are offered throughout the year. Programs include Voices of Colour, Global Expo, Cultural Extravaganza, Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month and other celebrations. Intercultural Resource Center – Publications, journals, books, newsletters and other publications are maintained for students, faculty and staff. Resources include external national scholarship resources.
