Admission Information

University Catalog

The UHCL Catalog is an official publication which describes in detail all pertinent policies governing student enrollment at the university. It includes valuable information intended to assist in planning academic endeavors. Students are responsible for keeping informed of and following the university’s policies and procedures; therefore, each student should become thoroughly familiar with information contained in the current catalog.

A catalog may be obtained from the Office of Admissions at no charge, or it may be downloaded and copied or viewed online at
http://www.uhcl.edu/admissions/catalog. Copies of this publication are also available for reference in all administrative and faculty offices on campus as well as the university library.

Important Facts regarding Admissions Information and Procedures

Students can apply online at http://www.uhcl.edu/admissions.

Please check the Web site for specific application deadlines for your classification level, academic program, and/or citizenship status.

Official transcripts, appropriate test scores, international student forms (if applicable), and other required documents must be submitted prior to receiving an admission decision. Transcripts may be sent electronically, mailed, or delivered in a sealed envelope and must not have been printed more than 60 days before submission. Please note: Sending transcripts electronically will expedite application processing.

Prospective students, who are interested in receiving detailed advisement prior to registration regarding transfer credit and acceptance to their academic program/plan, should complete their files by the Early Registration deadline.
Please note: Degree plans will not be developed for students whose files are incomplete or include unofficial documents.

Questions regarding admission requirements should be directed to an Enrollment Management Counselor at 281-283-2500.

Residency Information (for Tuition Purposes)

A student’s official residence status determination is made in the Office of Admissions once the application and supporting documentation are received. If a student does not qualify as a resident for tuition purposes; or, if the necessary supporting documents have not been received by the official census date for the semester of application, he or she must pay at the non-resident or foreign tuition rate. If a change in residence status occurs after submitting the application, students must download and complete a Petition for Change in Residence Status. This form may be downloaded from www.uhcl.edu/admissions. Select “Forms” and “Petition for a Change in Residency”. All requests for reclassification and supporting documentation should be submitted well in advance of the appropriate registration period, but not later than the census date. Please allow 10 days to review and process your request. Students who submit petitions within 10 days of fee payment should pay their fees or payment arrangements. Once a decision is made, students may receive a credit or refund to their account as appropriate. Requests for tuition reclassification received after the census date will be considered for the following semester. Please consult the UHCL Web site, the UHCL catalog, or www.collegefortexans.com/residency for more information.

*Please note that these requirements may be subject to change.

Additionally, if applicants are citizens of another country, where English is not the native language, they must submit the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Scores should be 550 or better on paper-based exams or 213 or better on computer-based exams. On the new iBT TOEFL test, a score of 79-80 is required. In lieu of the TOEFL, applicants may submit the International English Testing System (IELTS) exam; a score of 6.0 or higher is required. Scores submitted to fulfill this requirement must be less than 2 years old, at the time of application.

Please refer to the catalog for information pertaining to exemptions and waivers.

Undergraduate applicants to UHCL who are non-degree seeking are only required to submit the transcripts necessary to show that admissions requirements have been met and that they are eligible to return to the last institution attended.

Transient Student Enrollment

An undergraduate student who enrolls at the University of Houston-Clear Lake as a transient will not be required to meet the English composition or Mathematics admission requirements. However, all other admission criteria must be met. Enrollment under this option is limited to one semester only and transient students are not eligible to receive financial aid. In order to enroll for a second semester, transient students must submit an additional application and application fee to the Office of Admissions. Because the application processing fee is non-refundable, students should obtain permission from the associate dean of the appropriate academic department offering the course(s) of interest, before applying as a transient.

Graduate students may also be admitted to the University of Houston-Clear Lake as transients for one semester. Students applying as transients generally plan to transfer course work to another institution. These students must submit official transcripts showing proof that a bachelor’s degree or higher has been conferred. Students enrolling under this option, who decide to become degree-seeking, are required to reapply and pay the appropriate application fee. They must meet the current admission requirements of both the university and their academic program (see Graduate Studies Applicants).

Summer transient students have different requirements. For more information, please refer to the current UHCL catalog.

Graduate Admission Requirements

Some schools or academic majors/plans may have additional admission requirements or deadlines beyond the university requirements listed in this publication (please refer to the catalog or the school’s web site for more information). All degree-seeking graduate students must:

Have earned a bachelor’s degree from an approved regionally                 accredited institution;

Be eligible to immediately return to the last institution attended;

Submit official scores for the appropriate graduate exam; and,

Submit all official transcripts from previously attended accredited                       institutions of higher education.

Applicants with pending bachelor degrees

Students applying to a graduate program, prior to receipt of a bachelor’s degree, must submit official documentation that their application for graduation has not been denied. A letter of standing from the associate dean or registrar at their home institution is required. Students must earn their bachelor’s degree prior to enrollment at UHCL.
