Jeffrey Bowen

Coordinator of Audience Development

Jeffrey Bowen has been with the UHCL Art Gallery since November 2011. His main responsibility is to expand the educational impact of the gallery through innovative exhibitions and public programs. Before his position at UHCL, he was the assistant director of external affairs at the University of Houston’s Blaffer Art Museum. There, he ran the museum’s public relations, marketing, and membership initiatives for nearly five years. Prior to moving to Texas, Jeff worked in the membership department at the Nantucket Historical Association in Nantucket, Mass. In addition to working in the museums/galleries field, Jeff is also an adjunct instructor of art history and art appreciation.

Jeff originally hails from West Greenwich, R.I. He earned a Master of Arts in museum studies from Syracuse University and his Bachelor of Arts in medieval studies from Penn State University. Outside of his career in the arts, Jeff enjoys playing volleyball, making homebrewed beer, playing the Irish tin whistle, and going camping and hiking with his wife Diana and their two dogs Sammy and Lexi.

Karen L. Fiscus

Gallery Assistant

Karen Fiscus has been with UHCL since 2001, when she joined the university as an Instruction Assistant. As Gallery Assistant, Karen is responsible for preparing and installing exhibitions and art on campus. Prior to her position with UHCL, she has worked for H&R Block as an editor during tax season and as a laboratory assistant at Hercules Research Center and at The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Karen has also taught Ceramics 1 at Alvin Community College.

Karen was born in Smethport, Penn., and grew up in Lexington, Ohio. She has a Bachelor of Science in agriculture from The Ohio State University and received her Master of Arts in Humanities with a concentration on ceramics from UHCL in 2012. She enjoys working in clay, especially on the potter’s wheel. She has exhibited her wheel thrown and altered work at the Brandywine Festival of the Arts, Texas City Art Festival, The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. She is a past member of Aikido School of Ueshiba and the Houston Potters Guild, and current member of the Salt Grass Potters and the UHCL Art Association. In her spare time she enjoys gardening and visiting museums.
