In the fall of 2013, the University of Houston-Clear Lake is presenting a unique series of events and exhibitions. First, two comic book/graphic novel exhibitions open at the university on August 22. In the UHCL Art Gallery, visitors can see original works by professional Texas-based artists and writers working in the comic book industry. In the exhibition area on the second level of Bayou Building Atrium I, a selection of illustrations by UHCL students will also be on view. Then, on Saturday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., UHCL is pleased to present “comiCulture: From Creation to Consumption,” a symposium featuring expert guests who work in the comic book industry. The symposium will include panel discussions moderated by Terry Wagner (owner and founder of Mental Diversions Studio), portfolio reviews for aspiring comic book artists, and tours of the exhibitions. Participating in the symposium are:

Artists

  • Joe Eisma, co-creator of Morning Glories (published by Image Comics)
  • James O’ Barr, creator of The Crow
  • Terry Parr, artist at Sho Nuff Studios (Gemini Force/ Literati Press cover artist)
  • Tommy Phillips, artist at Arcana Comics/CPP Comics
  • Nick Pitarra, artist at Image Comics (Red Wing/Manhattan Project)

Writers

  • Leroy Brown, creator of Icecubes
  • David Doub, publisher/writer at Dusk Comics
  • Charles Martin, publisher/writer at Literati Press
  • James O’Barr, creator of The Crow
  • Bruce Small, co-founder of Brass Comics

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to gain insights from industry professionals who’ll share their wisdom on a number of topics like how to break into and work in the business of comics and how to improve illustrations. Just leave the kryptonite at home.
