Accounting Accreditation The Accounting Program at the University of Houston-Clear Lake has separate accounting accreditation from AACSB International. An Accounting Peer Review Team from AACSB International visited the university in October 2008. Our separate accounting accreditation was reaffirmed in January 2009. Our next visit is scheduled for the academic year 2013-2014. At the present time, only 171 universities from around the world have both accounting and business accreditation. The Accounting Program was commended by AACSB International for the following practices: 1. Strong strategic management plan 2. Effective learning assessment plan 3. Quality of new faculty 4. Relationship with local community colleges
Accounting Enrollment In the fall of 2009, the Accounting Program had 418 juniors and seniors majoring in accounting and 128 master’s degree candidates.
Mission Statement The mission of the accounting program is to provide junior, senior and master’s level students in the Houston/Galveston metropolitan population with an education designed to instill accounting knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes necessary to be successful in their careers.
The undergraduate program primarily serves the region’s community college systems by providing transfer students the opportunity to complete a four-year degree.
Graduate programs serve both full-time students and working professionals in the region and provide the background to sit for the CPA examination. Instruction is designed for small classes and flexible hours. Our Faculty Our faculty is active in professional organizations. Mattie Porter was Chair of the Texas Society of CPAs Relations with Educational Institutions Committee and was on the Editorial Board for the bimonthly publication of the Texas Society of CPAs, Today’s CPA. Don Kyle was on the Board of the Houston Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants and attended its meetings. Constance Lehmann attended meetings of the Houston Chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association and Houston Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Hui Du attended meetings of the Houston Chapter of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association and the Houston Chapter of Ascend. Michael Lacina attended meetings of the Houston Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants. Randall Xu attended meetings of the Houston Chapter of Ascend. Susan Sorensen gave a presentation at the New York State Society of CPAs. Barry Marks and Susan Sorensen have taught continuing education courses for the Houston Chapter of the Texas Society of CPAs. The Accounting Program is a member of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy and the International Association for Accounting Education and Research.
The faculty pursues a blend of research contributing to knowledge in professional practice, innovative pedagogy and discipline-based scholarship. The faculty interacts with professional organizations and the business community.
