Application and Selection Process
Requirements:
Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program in Counseling or Clinical Psychology and have completed a minimum of three years of graduate training.
Applicants must have had a minimum of 4 semesters of practicum experience.
Applicants must pass all doctoral comprehensive exams by the APPIC Match ranking deadline.
Applicants must have their dissertation proposal approved by the APPIC Match ranking deadline.
Applicants must complete all appropriate coursework prior to the beginning of internship.
150 hours of experience doing individual counseling with adult outpatients is required.
Desired Qualities:
Intern selection is based on degree of fit. We seek interns whose interests and goals are compatible with our training philosophy and training program. The following qualities are indicators of a good fit:
Applicants who demonstrate an interest and commitment to multiculturalism and diversity.
Applicants who have an interest in vocational counseling.
Applicants from an APA Accredited Doctoral Program.
Prior practicum experience in a counseling center. As our center is on a non-traditional campus, experience with individual and group counseling in other adult outpatient settings could provide sufficient preparation to work in our center.

Application Procedures:
Applicants must access the “AAPI Online” to create and submit their internship applications. Go to http://www.Appic.org and click on “AAPI Online”. The application deadline for our program is Sunday, December 2, 2012 at midnight CST.
Selection Process:
Applicants will be notified of their interview status by Dec 17, 2012. Interviews will take place by phone or Skype during the first 3 weeks of January. In-person interviews will not be conducted, although if you would like to visit our center we will be offering two open house dates on the mornings of Friday January 4th and Friday January 11th. In addition, contact information for current interns can be provided upon request.
This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
Internship Dates, Stipend, and Benefits:
The internship year is from August 8, 2013 to August 7, 2014. The stipend for the 2013-2014 internship year is $25,000. Interns receive their salary on the first working day of each month for the previous month.
Interns are full-time (40 hours per week) benefits-eligible university employees. Interns are provided with the same basic benefits as other University of Houston-Clear Lake staff, including sick leave (accrued at a rate of 8 hours per month), vacation leave (accrued at a rate of 8 hours per month), university holidays (approximately 13 annually), and basic health and life insurance. Interns are required to use all of their vacation days during the internship year, and the last five days must be taken during the last five working days of the internship. Interns can also purchase a staff parking permit and membership at the campus Fitness Zone at applicable staff rates.
Interns are also eligible for professional development time, which can be used for attending conferences or professional development workshops, dissertation research or defense, or job interviewing. Interns can use up to 36 hours of professional development time, scheduled with the prior approval of the training director.
Background Checks:
A criminal history background check and a background check for sexual exploitation of clients required by the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code will be performed for each intern matched to our program. Final internship offers for matched applicants are contingent upon successfully passing these background checks.
