CTELL Teacher Training

Each Spring semester, 2008-2012, the CTELL Partner Districts will select secondary teachers to participate in CTELL training which will begin in the Fall 2008. A CTELL waiting list will be maintained in the event that an opening becomes available.

Overview of CTELL Teacher Training

CTELL GOAL 2:  Provide high-quality professional development for secondary content teachers to help these teachers improve academic achievement, literacy and language development of ELLs

     Class will meet for two semesters starting with the fall semester 2008.

     Class will meet at UHCL every other class meeting.

     During the Week of August 25th, CTELL participants will complete surveys related to CTELL participation that are distributed by email and bring all survey materials to first class scheduled at UHCL.

     First CTELL class at UHCL will meet at 4:00 on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, location to be announced.
      
     Participants will earn 6 hours of graduate credit with all tuition, fees and textbook expenses paid by CTELL grant.
 
UHCL weeks:

  • Workshop approach with an emphasis on reflection will be used.
  • Each class will consist of a combination of: instructor led mini lesson, discussion of assigned readings, debriefing of previous week’s application activity, exploration and practice of the week’s component, and sharing of teaching strategies.
  • Topics to be addressed include: needs assessment, language acquisition, SIOP overview, lesson preparation-delivery-practice and application, comprehensible input, building background knowledge and developing vocabulary, increasing interaction, learning strategies, review and assessment, coaching your peers, maintaining momentum
  • Emphasis will be placed on implementation of SIOP

Application weeks:

  • Participants will engage in the application of what was addressed in the previous week’s class. This might be interviewing a student, revising a lesson plan, and/or trying a teaching strategy.
  • Participants will engage in a message board discussion of the week’s topic.
  • Peer observations will take place.
