Veterans’ Affairs Benefits

Compare Chapter 30 and Chapter 33 Benefits

Current Students

If you are a UHCL student receiving Chapter 30 (GI Bill), Chapter 32 (VEAP), Chapter 33 (Post 9/11 GI Bill), Chapter 34 (Vietnam Era GI Bill), Chapter 35 (Dependent Benefits), Chapter 1606 (GI Bill for Selected Reserve), or Chapter 1607 (REAP) and you want to receive benefits next semester, complete the UHCL Certification Form. Only courses listed on the Candidate Plan of Study (CPS) are certified. You can receive a copy of your CPS from your academic advisor. (A list of the academic advising units is located on the right.)

To change the number of credit hours, complete the UHCL Change in Enrollment or Credit Hours Form to notify our office.

You will need to verify your enrollment with VA once a month. You can do this online.

If you are also enrolled at another school for lower level courses that need to be certified, please submit a fee statement and course schedule from the other school.

New Students

If you are transferring to UHCL and you received VA benefits at another school, bring to Student Financial Aid:

If you are a first-time applicant for VA Educational Benefits, bring to Student Financial Aid:

The Department of Veterans Affairs determines which of the following federal educational benefits you are entitled to receive if you are a veteran:

  • Chapter 30 - Montgomery G.I. Bill
  • Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill
  • Chapter 35 - Dependents Educational Assistance (Spouse/Child)
  • Chapter 34 - Vietnam Era G.I. Bill
  • Chapter 32 - VEAP Contributory
  • Chapter 1606 - Montgomery G.I. Bill for Selected Reserve
  • Chapter 1607 - Reserve Education Assistance Program

Chapter 30 and Chapter 33 Benefit Comparsion

Hazlewood Waiver

If you have exhausted all your G.I. Bill benefits, you may still qualify for Texas Hazlewood benefits.

  • Veteran students new to the Hazlewood Program need to complete a Hazlewood Application. You also need to submit a copy of your DD214 and a letter from the VA Education Center stating your VA benefits have been exhausted. (Please see the application for more information on these requirements.)
  • In some cases, Dependents of Veterans may be eligible for the Hazlewood Waiver. New student qualifying for the dependent waiver should complete the Application for Eligible Dependents. You also need to submit a copy of your DD214 and a letter from the VA Education Center stating your VA benefits have been exhausted. (Please see the application for more information on these requirements.)
  • Each semester, previous recipients should complete the Application for Previous Recipients.

Hazlewood Exemption-Legacy Act

The Legacy Act allows veterans eligible for the Hazlewood Act to transfer unused Hazlewood hours to an eligible child. Eligible children are:

  • The stepchild, biological, or adopted child of the veteran
  • Claimed as a dependent on the veteran's federal income tax return
  • A resident of Texas
  • Maintaining satisfactory progress
  • 25 years of age or younger, unless the child provides documentation from a physician indicating he or she suffered from a severe illness or other debilitating condition which prevented the child from using the exemption before the age of 25.

To apply for the Legacy Act, the veteran and child should submit the following documents to the Office of Student Financial Aid:

  • The veteran must complete Transfer of Hours Form
  • If the veteran has never used Hazlewood hours, the veteran must complete the Hazlewood Application. If the veteran has used Hazlewood hours in the past, the veteran must complete the Application for Previous Recipients. The veteran also needs to submit a copy of his or her DD214 (member 4 copy) and a letter from the VA Education Center stating that VA benefits have been exhausted. (Please see the application for more information on these requirements.)
  • The veteran must submit a signed copy of the most recent tax return showing the student (child of veteran) was claimed as a dependent.
  • The student (child of veteran) must complete the Student Form
  • After the first semester, the veteran must submit the Application for Previous Recipients and the student (child of veteran) must complete the Student Form every semester.

Chapter 31-Vocational Rehabilitation

If you are a Disabled Veteran, contact VA Office Houston, TX at 713-383-1985. You may receive benefits under Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation.
