Application Instructions
The STARS scholarship paperless application process is available. Read the logon recommendations, application requirements and timeline. Then apply at STARS Online.
Browser Requirements
- Use only Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
- Allow pop-ups
- Allow cookies
Using browsers other than IE typically creates difficulties during login, essay writing, and uploading documentation.
Logon Recommendations
- Use your UHCL ID for your User Name so you won't forget it.
- Do not select Remember Me if using a public computer
- Save your work on a page by clicking the Save button.
- Logoff when done, so your information cannot be viewed by others who use the computer.
Application Requirements
- Two Letters of Recommendation
Recommendations should be emailed from the recommender directly to UHCLScholarships@uhcl.edu. The Office of Student Financial Aid will receive your emailed recommendations and upload them to your STARS scholarship application.
- Transcript - ONLY if Fall 2008 is your first semester at UHCL, provide transcripts from your previous college/university. Scan and save as a Word .doc file and upload when requested. First semester International Students may go to their International Advisor and request that an evaluation of their transfer transcript be given to the Office of Student Financial Aid. The Financial Aid Office will scan the evaluation into the student's application.
- Achievement List
Save as a Word .doc file and upload when requested. Your achievements should specify activities and accomplishments over the past 3 years including
- Honors and awards
- Community service
- Campus activities
- Affiliations and/or organizations
- Offices held
- Dates of service
- 2009-2010 FAFSA - U. S. citizens and permanent residents only
- You must sign your FAFSA electronically with your U.S. Department of Education PIN. If you do not know your PIN, apply for a new one online at www.pin.ed.gov.
- Complete the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.fafsa.ed.gov
- Specify the code for UHCL, 011711, on the FAFSA.
- Click the button to submit the FAFSA report to the Federal Government.
- Your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) score will be downloaded and given to the Scholarship Selection Committee. You may print a copy of the FAFSA EFC report for your own records.
- Failure to correctly complete and submit an online FAFSA may disqualify your application. If you need assistance filling out the online FAFSA, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.
- Current Financial Situation - Optional
Save as a Word .doc file and upload when requested. Write a brief paragraph describing your current financial situation. In the top right-hand corner, label this “My Current Financial Situation.”
- US citizens and permanent residents
If you feel that you have had significant life changes that your FAFSA does not reflect, you may write a brief paragraph to explain.
- International students
You may submit this paragraph if you choose even though you have not submitted a FAFSA.
- Personal Statement
Save as a Word .doc file and upload when requested. Write a one page minimum - two page maximum personal statement. The topic is your choice. Use 12-point font and double space. In the top right-hand corner, label this “Personal Statement".
- Scholarship Specific Essays
If a scholarship requires an additional essay, you will be prompted in each application procedure. You can write the essay in the space provided or copy and paste from a Word document.
