The STARS scholarship application process is now available!  Review the logon recommendations, application requirements and timeline. Then apply at STARS Online.  Read Frequently Asked Questions for tips & hints to help you prepare a better application.

Attend a Q & A session after you listen to the Podcast, read the FAQ's and the application requirements below.  Questions will be answered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Browser Requirements

• Use only Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
• Allow pop-ups
• Allow cookies

Browsers other than Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher may not allow you to upload documents such as your personal statement, achievement list, etc.  

Logon Recommendations

• Use your UHCL ID for your User Name so you won't forget it.
• Do not select Remember Me if using a public computer
• Save your work on a page by clicking the Save button.
• Logoff when done, so your information cannot be viewed by others who use the computer.

Application Requirements

1.  Personal Statement 
Save as a Word .doc or .docx file and upload when scholarship application prompts you to attach documents. Write a one page minimum - two page maximum personal statement. The topic is your choice. Use 12-point font and double space. In the top right-hand corner, label this “Personal Statement"

2.  Achievement List
Save as a Word .doc or .docx file and upload when scholarship application prompts you to attach documents.  Your achievements should specify activities and accomplishments over the past 3 years including

1. Honors and awards
2. Community service
3. Campus activities
4. Affiliations and/or organizations
5. Offices held
6. Dates of service
   
   

3.  Scholarship Specific Essays
If a scholarship requires an additional essay, you will be prompted in each application procedure. You can write the essay in the space provided or copy and paste from a Word document.

4.  Current Financial Situation - Optional
Save as a Word .doc or .docx file and upload when scholarship application prompts you to attach documents. Write a brief paragraph describing your current financial situation. In the top right-hand corner, label this “My Current Financial Situation.”

• US citizens and permanent residents
  If you feel that you have had significant life changes that your FAFSA does not reflect, you may write a brief paragraph to explain.
• International students
  You may submit this paragraph if you choose even though you have not submitted a FAFSA.

5.  2009-2010 FAFSA - U. S. citizens and permanent residents only 

You must sign your FAFSA electronically with your U.S. Department of Education PIN. If you do not have a PIN, or if you need to retrieve your PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov.

1. Complete the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at www.fafsa.ed.gov
2. Specify the code for UHCL, 011711, on the FAFSA.
3. Be sure to submit your FAFSA and write down your confirmation number.
4. Your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA will be used by the Scholarship Selection Committee.
5. Failure to correctly complete and submit a FAFSA may disqualify your application. If you need assistance filling out the online FAFSA, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.
