School of Education Scholarships

These scholarships are for SOE majors and teacher certification only.
SOE applicants are evaluated for the awards listed below and for General Scholarship.

The application process for these scholarships is available every year during the month of February.  Awards are made for the following academic year. Appliation information can be found at:  http://prtl.uhcl.edu/portal/page/portal/FAO/Scholarships/Application_and_Timeline

 Awarding for each scholarship is contingent on availability of funding.


 

Baer/Exxon
Major: Acceptance as a UHCL student seeking teacher certification
GPA: No specific requirement, but it will be a factor
Status: Undergraduate students enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Specifics: Current or new UHCL student, former Lee College Baer 2 participant
Additional Documentation Required: One recommendation letter from a teacher you had with in the last 2 years and a one page essay on educational goals and how this award will help you achieve these goals.


STEP-Success Through Education Program
Major: STEP Program
GPA: 2.5 overall
Status: Full-time undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: None


Cyril & Martha Kajs
Major: Degree seeking student in Education
GPA: 3.0
Status: Full-time or part-time (minimum of 6 credit hours), but preference given to full-time; undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: A one page essay describing why the student is pursuing an education degree


Jesse H. & Mary Gibbs Jones
Major: Any degree program in the School of Education
GPA: No specific requirement, but will be a factor
Status: Full-time or part-time; undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will not be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: None


Matthew and Gretchen Jaska
Major: Teacher Preparation Program
GPA: No specific requirement, but will be a factor
Status: Full-time or part-time; undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: None


Margaret and Alan Hill Language and Literacy
Major: Enrolled in either the Reading Program or the School Library and Information Science Program
GPA: 3.0
Status: Future or current students; full-time or part-time; undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will not be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: One page essay describing how you demonstrate leadership and academic ability


Partnership for Future Teachers
Major: Acceptance as a UHCL student seeking teacher certification
GPA: No specific requirement, but it will be a factor
Status: Undergraduate students enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Specifics: Current or new UHCL students from Galveston College, Lee College, San Jacinto College-North or Houston Community College-Southeast and in Gater2, Baer2, HomeGrown or Pathway to Teaching programs.
Additional Documentation Required: One recommendation letter from a teacher you had with in the last 2 years and a one page essay on educational goals and how this award will help you achieve these goals; list of activities that show commitment to teaching


SoE Development Scholarship
Major: Any degree plan in the School of Education
GPA: 3.0
Status: Full-time undergraduate
Financial Need: will not be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: One page essay on why you are pursuing a School of Education degree


SoE Endowment
Major: Any degree plan in the School of Education 
GPA: 3.0
Status:Full-time undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will not be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: One page essay on why you are pursuing a School of Education degree


Thomas Gee
Major: Seeking certification and enrolled in the Reading Program
GPA: No specific requirement
Status: Full-time or part-time graduate
Financial Need: Will not be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: One page essay on why you are pursuing the Reading Program


ABPW Carrie Lee Warren
Major: Education
GPA: Outstanding merit
Status: Must be female
Financial Need: Will not be a factor
Specific: Pursuing a career in public school education
Additional Documentation Required: None


Bonnie M. Staples
Major: Education
GPA: 3.0
Status: Full-time or part-time; undergraduate
Financial Need: Will not be a factor
Specific: Preference given to students active in extracurricular activities in school/university and/or community events
Additional Documentation Required: None


Fred Kierstead Memorial
Major: Education degree or certification
GPA: No specific requirement, but will be a factor
Status: Full-time or part-time; undergraduate or graduate
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: None


Instructional Technology Scholarship
Major: School of Education major with a concentration in Instructional Technology
GPA: Will be a factor
Status: Graduate
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: A one page essay describing why you want to earn a Master's degree in instructional technology and why you deserve this scholarship


Educational Leadership Scholarship
Major: School of Education major with a concentration in Educational Leadership
GPA: Will be a factor
Status: Graduate
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation Required: None


Dr. Steven Rakow Memorial
Major: School of Education major enrolled in the Intern II Program at UHCL
GPA: 3.0
Status: 9.0 hours
Specifics: Career plans to work as a K-12 public school teacher
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation: None


The Nolie Mayo 8-12 Teacher Education Scholarship
Major: Any UHCL major
GPA: Minimum undergraduate 2.5 on 4.0 scale and 3.0 for graduate
Status: 9.0 hours
Specifics: Accepted as an undergraduate or graduate degree-seeking student, while simultaneously seeking teacher certification for grades 8 - 12.
Financial Need: Will be a factor
Additional Documentation: Applicants must submit a 200 - 250 word statement on why they are pursuing a grades 8 - 12 certification.


Barbara Samuels Literacy Teacher Scholarship
Major:  Graduate Reading LLS Program
GPA: Will be a factor
Status:  Graduate student / full time or part time
Specifics:  Must be an outstanding teacher as identified by the School of Education Student Affairs Committee.  Outstanding can be explified by involvement with professional organizations, leadership at school or in the profession, partification in student activities organizations, etc.
Financial Need:  Will not be a factor
Additional Documentation:  None


Dr. Rebecca Huss-Keeler and Terry Keeler Graduate Early Childhood Education Scholarship
Major:  Early Childhood Education Program
GPA:  minimum is 3.0
Status:  Graduate student / full time or part time
Financial Need:  Will be a factor
Additional Documentation:  one-page essay explaining why student chose this career path and discuss aspirations in the field
