IntroductionThe English Enhancement Program is designed to assist foreign professionals in the development of conversational skills in English. The classes are directed to those Professionals who have already studied the grammatical principles of the English language, yet are still unable to converse fluently. The emphasis in the classroom is on the following aspects of the spoken language: correction of pronunciation, intonation, common English speech patterns, vocabulary building, idiomatic usage.
Class StructureClasses are small, with a minimum of five students. Each class is 90 minutes in length and is held once a week for seven weeks. Classes are divided into sections, matching the level of proficiency of the students. English classes are held in the Bayou Building and are also available at the worksite.
English as a Second Language (ESL)In addition, a program of English as a Second Language (ESL) is offered for the beginning student, incorporating writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Cultural aspects of American life and grammatical instruction are integral parts of the curriculum.
CEU CreditCourse participants may receive Continuing Education Units (CEU) upon satisfactory completion of their classes. CEU registration forms may be obtained by calling: 281-283-3033. There is a $5 charge for CEU certificates.
Registration for a foreign language may be done by mail, fax, or phone. Fees are payable in advance for the entire session. Fees are not refundable except to students who withdraw before the first class meeting, ($25 will be deducted from refund checks), or a credit will be given for the next session. Students may also register in person at the Foreign Language table in Atrium I of the Bayou Building at the scheduled times during registration week. Students may pay by Mastercard, Visa or Discover. Parking stickers may be obtained from the University Police for UHCL parking lot D.
Text Books and TapesTuition fees do not include books and tapes. Textbooks are sold in the University Bookstore, and tapes are available in the Foreign Language Program Office in the Bayou Building (1618).
