Our award winning Model Arab League competes nationally each year. Representing a different nation each year. This year, twelve student delegates from University of Houston–Clear Lake received the “Honorable Mention” Delegation Award for their representation of Egypt and were invited to repesent Syria nationally in Washington, D.C.
In addition to the collective team award, several students received individual recognition including Juan Garcia and Monica Rincon who were recognized as “outstanding” for representing Egypt interests on the Joint Defense council; and Cindy Steffens and Patricia Lewis were “outstanding” in Political Affairs. “Honorable Mention” recognition was extended to Eva Jane Terekhova and Carlton Porter for their work representing Egypt in Palestinian Affairs. Other members of the winning team were Stacy Baldon, Nicholas Burns, Pauline Williamson Fox, Oyinna Ogbonna, Deirdre Sprague, and Lisa Stewart.
“On Saturday morning, students were nervous and a little unsure of themselves” says Mike McMullen--one of the faculty sponsers. “By midday, however, they realized that they knew as much about Egypt as the delegates from West Point knew about Oman. The months of preparation really paid off.”
The students agree that the experience has been a good one for them.“The Model Arab League program is unparalleled opportunity to apply and improve diplomacy skills and knowledge of Arab world politics and history,” says student Jane Terekhova who served as a delegate for the Palestinian Affairs Council. “Acting as a delegate allowed me the chance to see the political world from the other side and to understand the multitude of factors involved in the political decision-making process.”
Student Juan Garcia who served as a delegate of the Joint Defense Council agrees.“It was a challenging, but rewarding experience to participate in the Model Arab League Conference,” says Garcia. “No matter how much I know about the nation I represent, there’s a constant demand to include each of the diverse needs and unique political perspectives of the various other members of the league.”
Through participating in the national Model Arab League program, UH-Clear Lake students will continue to learn about the politics and history of the Arab world, and the arts of diplomacy and public speech. In addition, their participation at the national council will further prepare students to be knowledgeable, well-trained, and effective citizens as well as civic and public affairs leaders.
