A Degree in Communication at UHCL
A Bachelor of Arts degree in communication requires a minimum of 120 college credit hours. Of these, a minimum of 60 must be lower-level credit hours and a minimum of 60 must be upper-level hours. To receive a degree in communication from UHCL, the last 30 upper-level hours must be taken at UHCL.
Students are advised to meet with their assigned faculty adviser prior to enrolling in any courses to sign a Candidate Plan of Studies. The undergraduate program in communication is designed to train students for careers in corporate or public communication. Communication majors are carefully instructed in both written and visual communication. This curriculum also includes courses in the humanities, since an ingredient in a successful communication career is a broad exposure to liberal arts.
Communication students are required to meet all general university requirements with a grade of “C” or better, and pass the Grammar-Spelling-Punctuation Test with a grade of 70 or higher. The GSP test is offered four times each semester and must be taken within the student’s first two long semesters. A student may take the GSP test as many as three times, but may not enroll in the internship program without having first passed it. Testing dates, times and rooms are posted on the communication bulletin board outside the Student Publications Office, room B1239, as well as on this Web site.
A communication internship is to be taken in the student’s last or next-to-last semester. Students already working in their chosen field who want to forego a communication internship must present their reasons in a written petition to the communication faculty. The student’s final semester will include a portfolio review as part of the exit requirement. The portfolio review entails a presentation of the student’s best written and graphic work.
