I chose a Geography degree because I have always been interested in different places and the environment. Places and the environment are central to the profession of urban planning and development. My geographic course work and an internship with the City of Pearland Planning Department have enabled me to greatly expand my understanding of urban planning. Through the internship I gained valuable experience in future land use planning and the importance of zoning and code enforcement to ensure desirable communities. After graduating in December 2011, I hope to work as an urban planner for either a city or private planning firm. Geography has helped me gain interest and knowledge in the importance of future sustainable societies, and I plan on implementing sustainable development practices during my career.
