Family Therapy - Master Degree
The MA in Family Therapy a full-time 2 or 3 year program consisting of 54-63 semester hours. It provides academic course work, clinical training, and supervision that prepares students for careers as competent professional family therapists and students continuing on into PhD studies. The program is accredited by the Commission of Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (AAMFT.org) and provides the education requirement for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Texas. Completion of the degree also fulfills the coursework requirements needed to take the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Exam in Texas. The UHCL Family Therapy Program prepares students to do research-based, effective relationally-oriented therapy with couples, families, individuals, and groups.
PREREQUISITES:
Admission to the University; Undergraduate courses in:
Introductory Psychology, Theories of Personality, and Abnormal Psychology.
Note: Similar content across various undergraduate courses with different titles may fulfill the above course prerequisites.
No undergraduate course may be counted toward graduate degree requirements in family therapy.

SPECIALTY
The Family Therapy Program offers an optional, six semester hour (two courses) "Specialty" that can be completed as part of the two year MA degree. The specialty is titled Emotion & Couple Therapy. It is comprised of the following two courses:
- Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (summer)
- Working with Powerful Emotions
