School of Human Sciences and Humanities
Communication - Bachelor of Arts Degree

The undergraduate program in communication is designed to train students for careers in corporate or public communication. Communication majors are carefully instructed in both written and visual communication. This curriculum also includes courses in the humanities, since an ingredient in a successful communication career is a broad exposure to liberal arts.

A Bachelor of Arts degree in communication requires a minimum of 123 college credit hours. Of these, a minimum of 54 must be lower level credit hours and a minimum of 55 must be upper level hours. The remaining 14 credit hours can be taken at either the lower or upper levels.

Communication students are required to meet all general university requirements with a grade of “C” or better, and pass the Grammar-Spelling-Punctuation Test with a grade of 70 or higher. The GSP Test is offered four times each semester and must be taken within the student's first two long semesters. A student may take the GSP test as many as three times. Testing dates, times and rooms are posted on the communication bulletin board outside the Student Publications Office, room B1239.

A Communication internship is to be taken in the student's last or next-to-last semester. Students must pass the GSP test before they can enroll in the internship course. Students wanting to forego internships must present their reasons in a written petition to the communication faculty. The student's final semester will include a 1 credit hour portfolio review. The portfolio review, conducted by the entire communication faculty, entails a presentation of the student's best written and graphic work. Students have the option of completing a second internship as an elective.
