Psychology Graduate - Admissions & Advising


Graduate students seeking a degree in Psyhology should:

  1. Go to the Office of Admissions to apply to the University (before being admitted to the psychology program)
    • All applicants must submit their scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants will have a minimum of a 3.0 Cumulative GPA in their last 60 hours of course work do not have to meet a minimum requirment for the GRE.
    • Applicants who do NOT have a 3.0 GPA must have either a minimum score of 2050 on the GRE take before August 2011 using the following formulat (GPA in the last 60 hours x 24) + GRE Verbal + GRE Quantitative or a minimum score of 350 on the GRE take after August 2011 using the following formula (GPA in the last 60 hours x 24) +GRE Verbal + GRE Quantitative
  2. Once you are admitted to UHCL, you will declare your major as Psychology.
  3. After you are designated as a Psychology graduate student, the Advising office (for Human Sciences and Humanities) will send you a notice with the date for the next scheduled graduate student orientation meeting. This is a required meeting at which you will be assigned a faculty advisor after this meeting.
    • Your faculty advisor will review your curriculum plan of study with you and can provide information about course selection and career planning.

 

Psychology

Master of Arts

The grauate program in Psychology leads to the Master of Arts Degree. All aspects of the degree are guided by the suggested curricula of the American Psychological Association and developed by our faculty for optimum learning in the classroom, laboratory, and applied settings. The program is a vehicle for advanced study of human behavior. course work is taken primarily in psychology, but with faculty permission appropriate course work in the behavioral sciences may be allowed. Applicants should have strong undergraduate preparation in the Behavioral Sciences, those with less than 12 upper-level hours in Psychology are required to take additional undergrauate course work at UHCL.

The 42 hour internship option can be used by, for example, students wishing to teach at the community college level. Managing human services agencies or research studies are also two examples of internships. Students will not be qualifited to be licensed as Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) after concluding the 36-42 hour program.
