Step 2: 
Admission to the Bachelor of Social Work Program

 

Once you are admitted to the university, you will need to complete selected social work courses prior to being admitted to the BSW program.  In your first semester as a UHCL student, you should enroll in these prerequisite courses:

  • SWRK 4031:  Introduction to Social Work
  • SWRK 4034:  Issues and Ethics in Social Work

These courses are offered in fall, spring and summer semesters.  While taking these courses, you should apply to the Social Work program.

To be eligible for “Full Admission Status,” students must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Transcripts must show completion of a minimum of 54 hours of course content, including satisfactory completion of mandatory portions of the 42-hour Texas Core requirement.  Only grades of “C” or better are counted toward these totals.
  2. Students must be admitted to the University.
  3. Students must have completed the two Social Work prerequisite courses:  “Introduction to Social Work” and “Professional Issues and Ethics in Social Work Practice.”

Successful applicants are dedicated to the values of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics including a commitment to social work’s role in institutional change and a broad-based respect for diversity. Paid or volunteer work in social service or civic organizations is viewed favorably as demonstration of a positive motivation in applicants.
