Master’s Degree, Literature


You have three choices in M.A. plans for literature. You may complete the degree with a Thesis, a Project, or a Comprehensive examination. 

Option 1: Thesis
• 24 hours of graduate-level courses including 18 hours of literature courses
• 6 hours of thesis research

Option 2: Project
• 24 hours of graduate-level courses including 21 hours of literature courses
• 6 additional hours of coursework
• 6 hours project research

Option 3: Exam
• 30 hours of graduate-level courses including 27 hours of literature courses
• 6 additional hours of coursework
• Comprehensive exam

3 Hours –
Required Literature Course
Literary Theory
12 Hours –
Reading-Centered Courses

Any course that studies literary texts. For example:
Spenser and Milton
Seminar on Shakespeare
American Romanticism
Modern Poetry

3-12 Hours –
Graduate Literature Courses
Thesis, Project, Coursework Option totals differ.
6-9 Hours Additional Coursework Project, Coursework Option totals differ.

As part of your degree coursework, you may choose to earn a certificate reflecting a focused area of study. Certificates are available in American Studies, Composition and Rhetoric Certificate, and Professional Writing. Choosing to earn a certificate does not increase the total hours required for graduation.
