Study Abroad in Turkey! The Crossroads of Civilization UHCL Summer Study Abroad Summer 2012
UHCL HSH and Anthropology and Cross-Cultural Studies will offer a study abroad opportunity to Turkey! Both undergraduates and graduates are welcome to apply.
Turkey, The Crossroads of Civi- lization UHCL Summer Study Abroad. This 12 day trip includes travel to various cities throughout Turkey. We will visit ancient cultural and religious sites important to Ju- daism, Christianity and Islam, tour various sites and museums, meet and share meals with host families in different cities, visit local schools and civic groups, as well as visit writers and journalists.
The cost of the trip is $2950, plus 3 hours tuition in the spring and sum- mer 2012 semester. Dates are May17th-May28th.
Cost of the trip includes: Interna- tional flight, hotel accommodations and most meals, domestic flights and ground transportation in Turkey, and entrance fees to trip sites and museums.

Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, Ba- silica Cistern, Blue Mosque, Hippo- drome, Taksim Square, Catholic Church of S. Antonio di Padova, Bosphorus boat tour, Sulemaniye Mosque, Kariye Museum, Byzan- tium Basilica of Antipas, Virgin Mary's Shrine, St. John's Basilica, Visits to the antique cities of Perga- mon and Ephesus, The Cave of the Prophet Job, Caravansarai and an- cient University of Harran, Abra- ham's Pool, Alaaddin's Hill, Selcuk Mosque of Konya, underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, city tour of Kayseri, tour of Greek Orthodox and Jewish sites in Istan- bul, and souvenir shopping at the Grand Bazaar.
Museums include:
Jewish Museum of Istanbul, Efes Archeological Museum, Zeugma Museum, Mevlana Museum, Goreme Open Air Museum, Turkish Islamic Art Museum, Istanbul Ar- cheological Museum, Visit to an Ebru workshop (calligraphy and marbling).
The UHCL trip to Turkey is generously underwritten by the Houston-based Institute for Interfaith Dialogue which sponsors interncultural trips to Turkey to promote peace-building intiatives.

Dr. Maria Curtis and Anthropology undergraduate student Christina Grobmeier at the Virgin Mary's House in Selcuk, Turkey. The strips of fabric and paper represent wishes and prayers of pilgrims who visit the site. Selcuk is located along the Aegean coast outside Izmir, near the ancient city of Ephesus.
