Dean Rick ShortDr. Rick Short became Dean of the School of Human Sciences and Humanities and Professor of Psychology in 2011. Dr. Short earned the Ph.D. in professional psychology (school psychology specialty) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining UHCL, he was Associate Dean of the College of Behavioral and Health Science and Professor of Psychology at Middle Tennessee State University. He was a long-time faculty member at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he also served as director of the doctoral program in school psychology and director of the Center for Learning, Evaluation, and Assessment Research. He has held faculty appointments at Eastern Kentucky University, Auburn University, and the Pennsylvania State University, and also worked as Assistant Executive Director in the Education Directorate of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Short has held a number of state, regional, and national leadership positions in psychology, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has published 7 books and monographs, 8 chapters, and over 60 articles and technical reports. Dr. Short also worked for a number of years as a licensed psychologist with extensive clinical andadministrative experience with children, adolescents, families, schools, and treatmentfacilities.

Dr. Samuel Lyndon Gladden is new Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the School of Human Sciences and Humanities and Professor of Literature. He earned his doctorate in Literature from Texas A&M University. Prior to UHCL, Dr. Gladden was the Special Assistant to the Dean, College of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences; Professor of English; and Associate Head, Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA.

Pat Cuchens is the new Executive Director of Operations of School of Human Sciences and Humanities with responsibilities in assessment, communication, and technology. She is Senior Lecturer in Writing and earned her master's degree in English from the University of West Florida, in Pensacola. Ms. Cuchens served as the Interim Coordinator of the Office of Planning and Assessment and Chair of the UHCL SACS Reaccreditation Committee.

Deborah Griffin serves as a member of HSH's Administrative Team as Division Chair for the seven programs within Humanities and Fine Arts. She earned her master's degree in literature from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and her bachelor's degree in management from Texas A&M University. Ms. Griffin is also a Senior Lecturer in Writing and she received the 2012 Outstanding Lecturer award.

Dr. Sharon Hall earned her doctorate degree in developmental psychology from the University of Houston. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book Raising Kids in the 21st Century as well as peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and reviews published over a twenty-year period. As Division Chair, Dr. Hall works with the undergraduate and graduate programs in Psychology and continues to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate psychology courses at UHCL.





Dr. Everette PennDr. Everette Penn

Dr. Everette Penn earned his doctorate degree in criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As Department Chair, Dr. Penn works with nine programs in Behavioral and Social Sciences. He is the Principal Investigator for the Teen and Police Service Academy, Department of Justice/COPS Office funded program (www.TAPSAcademy.org) and has authored dozens of publications on juvenile justice, race and crime and homeland security. In 2005, he was named a Fulbright Professor of American Studies in Egypt. He is on the Board of Directors for the Fulbright Alumni Association and Chairs the Diversity Task Force. He continues to teach at the graduate level: Race and Crime, Graduate Criminology Seminar and Internship.

Dr. Stephenson is chair of the Department of Liberal Arts, which includes Literature, History, Humanities, and Philosophy. He earned his BS in Marine Engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and his MA and PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Kent State University. His research interests are in classical rhetoric, workplace writing, and literacy.
