Welcome to GHAWP

New Teacher Institute

Each summer the Greater Houston Area Writing Project (GHAWP) awards Fellowships to exemplary teachers in the Houston area. Two week New Teacher Institutes include teachers with 1 to 3 years of experience from all content areas. In the New Teacher Institutes teachers meet to discuss and improve their own writing and learn methods to increase teaching effectiveness.

The Institutes are held for two weeks (Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).

Participants receive 3 hours of graduate credit and the National Writing Project covers 50% of the tuition.

Participants complete a New Teacher Institute application, interview with the GHAWP director, and complete an application for admission to the University of Houston – Clear Lake. In addition to the application for admission to the University participants must send an original transcript from the University where they received their BA or BS degree. Address: Office of Admissions, UHCL, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX 77058-1098.
