How can I register for Courses?

Look for Courses in webpage of your Major in
School of Sciences and Computer Engineering: http://prtl.uhcl.edu/portal/page/portal/SCE
School of Business: http://prtl.uhcl.edu/portal/page/portal/BUS/NewBUS/index.html
School of Education: http://www.uhcl.edu/portal/page/portal/SOE
School of Human Sciences and Humanities: http://www.uhcl.edu/portal/page/portal/HSH/HOME
Make a list of courses with Courses Codes [ISAM, BIOT, ACCT etc] you want to register for
After you have list of Courses you want to register Login into E-services
Now follow these steps to add your classes One-by-one

  • Go to “Enrollment”
  • Click on “Enrollment: Add Classes”
  • Select Term
  • Select Browse Catalog in dropdown list
  • Select Alphabet that your Course number [e.g.: A for ACCT XXXX] Starts with.
  • Click on Your Course Code [e.g.: ACCT - Accounting]
  • Look for preferred course Click on “View Class Sections”
  • Click on “SELECT CLASS” to add class.
  • Click on “NEXT” to finish enrolling for Class.

How to pay my fees?

To pay fees, you may use credit card, wire transfer, or Demand Draft (DD). To use credit card, you can go ahead and pay on E-Services under “Student Financials”. To make a wire transfer you have to contact Michelle Price for wire information. She can be reached at PriceMi@uhcl.edu or 282-283-2139. If you choose to pay by DD, the amount is preferred to be exact fee amount which can be viewed through E-services. If it is over the amount you will have to wait 6-8 weeks for the refund. Due to the wait, it is suggested that you bring another mode of payment, such as the Travelers Checks for any additional expenses such as housing, personal items etc. The DD is written to University of Houston Clear Lake.

** Please inform your bank not to distort the checks, such as with tape in the middle of the checks, because most of the US banks might not accept it.

How much fees should I pay for first semester?

If you have a scholarship, it will be around $3400
If not, $6400 approximately
The above fees is for 3 courses
Note: Number may vary from person to person, major to major and, School to School

Do I have to attend International Orientation?

All F and J visa holders are required to attend New International Student Orientation or a hold will be placed on your account. This is not the same as department or New Student Orientation (NSO). Please make your travel arrangements so you arrive prior to international orientation day.

Health Insurance

Your health insurance fee ($452 for Spring subject to change) will be included in your fees automatically and it can be seen in your E-Services.
If you want school’s health insurance than you don’t need to sign up or pay additionally, it will be included in your fees. Please find the details of school’s insurance in the below links.

If you want to take health insurance from a private health insurance company, the insurance coverage must meet the requirements of the university. The university requirements are that health insurance should cover for a minimum of $50,000 in health benefits, $10,000 Medical Evacuation and $7,500 Repatriation benefits for a period beginning the first day of class until the first day of class of the following semester. In addition to the preceding coverage, policies must meet standards comparable to UHCL Student Health Insurance.

What Vaccinations should I take before arriving??

Beginning January 2012, Texas State law (SB 1107) mandates that all entering students under the age of 30 provide a certificate signed by a health care provider or an official immunization record verifying that a student has been vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, or has received a booster during the five years prior to registration.
Also, we highly recommend that you take whichever vaccinations you think is beneficial to your health.

Please make sure you bring the necessary documents to show that you already received the vaccination.

Where can I see my exact fees?

After enrolling to classes, you can know the exact amount of fees you can pay.

  2. Look for option/link "Account Summary"

What do I do if I want to travel outside the US?

You must always get your I-20 or DS-2019 endorsed first. Any of the International Advisors can sign. Failure to do so might keep you from coming back to the US.

How do I register for New International Student Orientation?

You can register through your UHCL E-services account.

Where should I register for ORIENTATION program?

How much money should I bring initially for expenses?

Expenditure per month for students in UHCL will be $400-$500 on average. It is suggested that you to carry enough money survive for first 5-6 months.

How much money do I need to get from home?

As an international student, you are admitted under the provision that you can reasonably afford to study at this institution. It is highly advisable that you budget at least $20,900  for living expenses which are noted on your I-20 (International exchange students on J-1 visas should consult with International Admissions about the annual expenses). Also, it is recommended that you have some U.S. currency with you once you arrive. For more information, please read our International Student Handbook

Can I apply for Dollar for Scholar (DFS) scholarship next semester after coming?

If you were not awarded DFS, you cannot apply for DFS next semester, as DFS is only for first time incoming students.
However you can apply for STARS scholarship in FEB 2012. But you need to have an exceptional profile with a good GPA and also active on-campus involvement. You will be awarded this scholarship in July.

While there are some departments such as computer labs which do not post job postings online. You need to visit them when you arrives Houston. Also, you can apply for a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Research Assistant (RA) positions in your department.

Intercultural and International Student Service also provide GPS workshop Learn tips and strategies on how to better present yourself to possible On-Campus employers.
