JSC History Collection

On February 8, 2001, UHCL signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NASA's Johnson Space Center and the National Archives and Records Administration to provide "temporary transfer of custody and loan of historically significant records accumulated by JSC relating to human spaceflight." This MOU allows the records to be housed in the University Archives where researchers can access them.

The JSC History Collection at UHCL consists of eight series: Apollo, Skylab, Apollo Soyuz Test Project (ASTP), Shuttle, Station, Oral History, General Reference, and Center. These series were compiled by numerous historians working on chronologies and histories of the manned flight programs. Documents were collected from various sources at JSC, contractor and other NASA centers.

Descriptions of each series are available on the JSC History web page.

The NASA Oral History Project began in the mid-1990s with a mission to identify key personnel involved with JSC activities and to interview them as part of the historical record. Materials housed at UHCL consist of transcripts, and CD and/or cassette recordings.

The Oral History Project transcripts are available as .PDF files online at the JSC Oral History Project web page.

Searching the JSC History Collection

Two electronic databases, provided by NASA, allow you to search the contents of the JSC History Collection.

The History database searches to the document level within the chronological files of Apollo, ASTP, Skylab, early Shuttle, General Reference and the Oral History series.

Directions and guidelines for effective searching on this database can be found in the History Database User Guide.

The Archive database searches to the folder level within the Center, Shuttle, Station, Skylab, General Reference and ASTP Series.

Directions and guidelines for effective searching on this database can be found in the Archive Database User Guide.

Using the JSC History Collection

A few guidelines protect the collections for future use.  Patrons will be asked to complete a standard Patron Registration Form when they arrive and sign in the daily visitor log.  Patrons may use lap-top computers or paper and pencil to take notes; however, no pens are allowed.  Archival materials are kept in closed stacks and do not circulate.

Photocopies or PDF scans may be provided.   See our Reproduction Fees Policy.
