National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST)
(formerly National Bureau of Standards (NBS))
Develops national standards to ensure product reliability, to promote public health and safety, to improve the environment, to maintain the national measurement system, etc. One large set of NIST standards are the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) which deal with computer hardware, software, data representations, ADP operations, and telecommunications. The NIST site contains indexing to and/or fulltext of some Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) and Standards Reference Data material.
