Generation Proud and Celebrating Our Elders
GTF/COE Scholarship Background and Purpose
The Celebrating Our Elders Project recently received a Greater Texas Foundation grant that will enhance our ability to award scholarships. The COE Project now offers two different scholarships: Greater Texas Foundation/Generation Proud Scholarship and the Leading for Change Scholarship. While the scholarship have different eligibility criteria requirements, the essential purpose of honoring our Hispanic and African American elders remains the same.
African and Hispanic cultures celebrate elders. Elders transmit to youth the wisdom necessary to develop useful and respectful lives. This pattern of elders teaching and inspiring youth is also characteristic of African-American and Hispanic communities in the U.S.
Think about your life. Has there been a particular African-American or Hispanic elder who has supported or inspired your achievement? Did this elder believe in you when accomplishing your dreams seemed difficult? Your elder could be a relative, teacher, coach, minister or neighbor.
We want to hear your story of how your African-American or Hispanic elder has influenced your life.
In honor of these elders and your achievements, the University of Houston-Clear Lake is offering scholarships to students whose stories about supportive elders best exemplify the intergenerational strengths of African and
Hispanic communities.
While an honored elder must be African-American or Hispanic, a student from any ethnic group may apply. In short, students do not need to be African-American or Hispanic, but each story must honor an African-American or Hispanic elder.
