Welcome Friends & Family!

Parents: Go to Dean of Students

Letter to Parents

A Message to Parents

Welcome Parents! Just as we are excited to welcome your student to UHCL, we are delighted to have you join our community as well.

College is a time for exploration, testing, building, and developing. It is also a time for both successes and sometimes failures. It is the goal of the Division of Student Services to create an environment where your student is learning from these experiences, both in and outside of the classroom. By seeking out these intentional learning activities, they will come to understand and appreciate that college is much more than an opportunity for upward mobility; it is about becoming a well-rounded, educated and contributing member of society.

As with any new experience, there will also be a learning curve and students sometimes find themselves in need of assistance. As Dean of Students, it is my office’s role to be available for students at these times. Please understand that in most cases this interaction will only be between your student and myself. The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limits my ability to discuss certain academic and behavioral issues with anyone but the student. It is during this time that I will encourage a dialogue between you and your student. However, we value you as a partner in your student’s experience and I would be more than happy to help you understand those policies and procedures for which you may have questions.

Your student’s success depends on the amount of effort given and level of participation in the campus community. Please encourage your student to become actively involved in out of class experiences and with a variety of faculty and staff. As you explore our web site, you will discover many of these enriching and dynamic opportunities for a full and well rounded education. Again, welcome to the UHCL community. We look forward to working with your student as they embark on this life-changing experience.

David Rachita
Interim Dean of Students
