    Mission Statement

 

The Office of International Initiatives seeks to advance international education at

        UHCL through facilitating international engagements overseas and within the 

        Houston community.  OII accomplishes its goals through building partnerships

        with institutions around the world, encouraging study and research abroad, and

        programming collaboratively with local international organizations and campus-

        based units.

 

 

 

    Vision Statement

 

The University of Houston-Clear Lakes strives to be a globally-focused university.

        The Office of International Initiatives at UHCL:             
             
● Encourages understanding of at least one other culture             
● Expands study abroad and internship opportunities for all students             
● Focuses on faculty development and rewards for international involvement            
● Examines the organizational needs of international education            
● Cooperates with institutions in other countries            
● Works with local schools and communities to develop and support international  understanding and international initiatives

    History

  • First agreement (2+2 transfer program) was signed in 1985 with the Institute of Technological Studies in Colombo, Sri Lanka, followed by agreements in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates in 1989 and National Sun Yat-Sen University, Taiwan in 1992.
  • Major emphasis on international initiatives began in 1992 with signing of a general cooperation agreement with the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara.
  • Full time international initiatives office established in 1992.
  • Initiatives in twenty countries.
    Argentina,  Bangladesh,  Brazil,  Colombia,  Dominican Republic,  Egypt,  India,  Japan,   Mexico, Pakistan, Thailand, The Netherlands, People’s Republic of China, Slovakia,   Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Spain,  Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Vietnam

 

Noteworthy campus internationalization efforts:

  • International students represent approximately 7 percent of enrollment.
  • International expertise of 148 faculty and staff in 37 countries and 24 languages.
  • Three way student exchange for study abroad with Mexico, United States and Slovakia in the arts. 
  • Specialized training toward a worldview.
  • Collaboration and Consulting with International leaders in the Houston community including community colleges, consulates, Office of the Mayor and international chambers, and various public and private institutions.  
  • International Cultural Immersions
     India, Muslim Nations, China, Countries in Africa, Indonesia, Central America, Korea, Netherlands, Iraq, Vietnam and Turkey.
  • Annual International Education Awards.
  • Presentations on cultural intelligence.
  • International consulting both within in the community and abroad.
  • Extensive list of international publications by UHCL faculty.
  • Protocol Resources.
  • Hosting of international scholars and dignitaries.
  • More than half a dozen international student organizations.
  • Celebration of International Week through university-wide activities.  
  • Presentations of professional papers and seminars.
  • International and Cultural Conscious Reading and movies.
  • Annual publication of the OII magazine.
