Campus Police Services

The primary functions of the University Police are the preservation of the public peace and order, protection of persons and property, enforcement of the laws of the state of Texas, and the safeguarding of the individual and collective rights of the citizenry.  The department utilizes a proactive concept of policing to accomplish its public safety responsibilities.

 Safety Transportation Service

The department provides an escort service for all faculty, staff, students and visitors in the interest of safety. This service is available 24 hours a day to all persons going to on-campus locations. You may request this service by stopping by the department, which is located in the Bayou Building, Room 1636, by using any of the Emergency/Information Call Boxes located throughout the parking lots on campus, or by calling Ext. 2222 from any house phone.

Vehicle Assistance

The department will be glad to assist if you should experience difficulty in starting your vehicle or in the event you lock your keys inside your vehicle. To request assistance, use any of the Emergency/Information Call Boxes, call us at Ext. 2222, or stop by our office within the Bayou Building, Room 1636.

Emergency/Information Call Boxes

Emergency/Information Call Boxes have been placed at various locations in the parking lots. These boxes can be located by their bright blue lights directly above each callbox and some are mounted on light poles identified by bright yellow and red signs labeled:

 POLICE EMERGENCY/INFORMATION .

Operation is easy.  Place your thumb over the red sensor and hold it until you hear a telephone dialtone.  A police dispatcher will answer your call.  These call boxes can be used to call for police assistance, escorts, assistance with vehicle problems, and other basic information.

Lost and Found

The student/employee makeup of our campus has shown that the majority is extremely honorable and most items are turned in to the Police Department. Found items should be turned in to the department, Bayou Building, Room 1636 for processing and storage. Contact the department if you have lost anything because many items are never claimed.

Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention is a cooperative effort, which can be achieved by the university community and the police working together. To better understand how to prevent crime, one must know that three elements are required before a crime can occur. These three elements are desire, a target and opportunity. A crime cannot occur if you prevent one of these elements. You can do your part in crime prevention by not giving crime an opportunity.

The department attempts to target groups and activities within the university and provides seminars dealing with crime prevention and safety. Police Department "Bookmarks" informing students on the prevention of book theft and "Don't Give Crime an Opportunity" (rocket red) fliers are only two of the many programs utilized and being created by the Police Department. The department also provides information on law enforcement and the role of the University Police to groups outside the university in an attempt to inform the public and to be part of the community.

Protect Yourself

• Don't walk alone at night.
• Before walking to your vehicle, have your keys ready and look inside your vehicle before entering.
• Report any suspicious people or circumstances to the University Police immediately. Stop a crime before it happens. Utilize the Police Department Escort Service and the Emergency/Information Call Boxes that are located in the parking lots.
• Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing if jogging or bicycling after dark. These activities should not be done alone. If alone, let someone know your route and how long you should be gone. Stay on lighted paths and roadways. Remember to ride with traffic and jog/walk against traffic.

• Please lock your vehicle upon arriving on campus. Valuable items should be secured in the trunk of your vehicle.
• Don't leave valuable items lying out in the open and unattended.
• Properly mark or engrave your name, drivers license number of Social Security Number on all property, including your textbooks.
• Check with the Police Department for your lost or found property.

Parking Regulations

The University Police Department is responsible for enforcing all of the parking and traffic regulations on campus. All faculty, staff and students must obtain and display a current UHCL permit in their vehicle. Visitors may utilize the Visitor's Lot (located within Lot D, the Student Parking Lot). A Traffic and Parking regulation booklet can be obtained at the University Police Department.  Specific lot information can be obtained also.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Students are expected to maintain standards of personal discipline that are in harmony with the educational goals of the University of Houston-Clear Lake; to observe federal, state and local laws and university regulations; and to respect the rights, privileges and property of others.

Identification - Don't Leave Home Without It

In the interest of security and personal protection, everyone should carry identification at all times. Section 51.209 of the Texas Education Code outlines the authority given to the University of Houston System Board of Regents to enforce or otherwise require all persons on campus to carry some form of legitimate identification.
