Art Exhibition presents “The Hope Suite”

Hope is the theme expressed in “The Hope Suite” by mixed media artist Mark L. Smith. Smith uses paper, canvas, metal and a variety of techniques including monotype, painting, drawing and collage to create his unique works of art. Art School for Children and Young Adults Registration

UH-Clear Lake’s Art School for Children and Young Adults celebrates the Art of the Renaissance during the spring semester of art courses offered to students ages 3 ½ through 12th-grade. Classes are ongoing at UH-Clear Lake and at select elementary schools in the area through April 5. Tuition ranges from $80-$125, depending on selected class, location and child’s age. Lone Star College Faculty Art Exhibition

Spring UHCL Physics and Space Science Seminar Series

Come hear the argument of an expert at a seminar called “Are the laws of physics actually find-tuned?” given by University of St. Thomas Assistant Professor of Physics Jim Clarage. This lecture is part of a series presented by the UHCL School of Science and Computer Engineering’s Physics Program and the Center for Education. Power of Kabbalah Level One

Bring a lunch and join students, faculty, staff and community members for a free six-week course called Power of Kabbalah Level One. World Video Classroom brings teacher Eitan Yardeni’s lessons and workshops on spiritual wisdom to the screen. The course is facilitated by UH-Clear Lake’s Foreign Languages Program office and space is limited to the first 30 participants who register. Black History Month

Hear how physics research can create a dramatic impact on society by attending the lecture “The Story of Giant Magnetoresistance: From the Laboratory to the Hard Drive” by Anne Reilly, grants development associate and adjunct professor of physics at UH-Clear Lake. This lecture provides an overview of the GMR phenomenon of computer hard drives and its history from discovery to the Nobel Prize in 2007. The event is presented by the UH-Clear Lake’s School of Science and Computer Engineering’s Physics Program. All are invited to attend the lectures for a $15 fee, with discounted series prices available. Solero Flamenco performance

Solero Flamenco’s Irma “La Paloma” and Jeremias Garcia “El Valiente” present “Un Pedacito de España,” a performance of authentic Flamenco true to the passionate music of the Andalusian gypsies. Rich in tradition and respect for the art, the sights and sounds will transport the audience to the realm of music from the heart. A complimentary reception will be held after the concert. Spring Outreach Day

The official “day of service” for UH-Clear Lake students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members brings people together to benefit Houston area non-profits. This year’s organizations include Houston Food Bank, Baytown Habitat for Humanity, Bay Area Habitat for Humanity, League City Animal Shelter, and Mountbatten House. Projects last about four hours but times vary according to projects, which are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Pre-registration is required. ‘Men Who Stare at Goats’ film presentation

Loosely based on actual events and based on the book by the same name, this comedy is an account of a military experiment in using psychic powers. The film stars George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, and Jeff Bridges. UH-Clear Lake Neumann Library Research Librarian Gerald Churchill will speak about themes present in the film during the Feb. 14 presentation. Tickets are $3.75. Learning a foreign language or improving conversational English can enhance career goals and expand personal horizons. Group classes meet weekly for seven weeks to learn French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish at beginner to advanced levels. New student fees are $135 and returning students are $115. Private lessons are also available. ‘The Least of These’ film presentation

A Rice University graduate student created this “The Least of These,” a thought-provoking documentary that examines the treatment of immigrants at a prison-turned-family detention center. . A panel discussion will take place before the film that includes UH-Clear Lake Associate Professor of Anthropology Christine Kovic, UH-Clear Lake Assistant Professor of Sociology Stephen Cherry and Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Catholic Charities Vice President of Community Relations and Development Joe Rubio.
