UH-Clear Lake celebrates Women’s Studies Week
A poetry reading, lectures and a film presentation are among several events scheduled in March at University of Houston-Clear Lake to celebrate Women’s Studies Week. These special events offer a chance for both the university and the community to learn more about women’s studies.
“Each year, the women’s studies program commemorates International Women's Day (March 8) and Women's History Month (March) through our Women’s Studies Week program,” explained Christine Kovic, associate professor of anthropology. “This year, we are celebrating 35 years of Women's Studies at UH-Clear Lake and our program will include a presentation from Gretchen Mieszkowski (charter faculty and professor of literature) on her many years of experience teaching and developing women's studies on campus.”
Programs being held during Women’s Studies Week include:
* March 4 – “Children on Campus: Meeting our Future.” This program features art, music and stories for children. The event runs from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in Atrium 1 of the Bayou Building.
* March 5 – “Gender Matters: 35 Years of Women’s Studies at UHCL.” Gretchen Mieszkowski is the lecturer. Program begins at 7 p.m. in the Neumann Library.
* March 9 – “Rabbit-Proof Fence.” UH-Clear Lake Assistant Professor in Humanities Shreerekha Subramanian will lead a discussion following a presentation of the film, “Rabbit-Proof Fence.” The program begins at 4 p.m. in Room 2234 of the Bayou Building.
* March 12 – Poetry Reading. Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, associate professor of English at the University of Oklahoma and author of two books of poetry, will lead this reading and have a book signing at the end of the event. Program begins at 7 p.m. in the Bayou Building’s Garden Room.
* March 25 – “Gender, Migration & Anthropology: Research Notes from Mexico’s Southern Border.” Christine Kovic presents this lecture. Program begins at 4 p.m. in room 2235 of the Bayou Building.
Since 1974, students have had the opportunity to examine women’s diverse lives, their special contributions and roles, and the social constructions of gender from cross-cultural perspectives through the university’s Women’s Studies program.
