UH-Clear Lake prof receives National Science Foundation grant
University of Houston-Clear Lake Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science LieJune Shiau received a $152,772 three-year award from the National Science Foundation for her project, “Applied Bifurcation Theory.”
“In the past several decades, neuroscience and biological science have greatly benefited
from insights gathered from mathematical models and studies,” explained Shiau. “To date, there has been no abstract theory for observing or understanding multiple periodic responses in modeling auditory system, so this study will be of interest in neuroscience study.
“Another example of studying neural field model with nonlocal connections will provide patterning resulting from the delay effect. This patterning should help to further develop an understanding in future studies of epilepsy, coma and brain injury. ”
Shiau has been greatly encouraged by the NSF from this research award and other support the foundation has given her over the years.
“Graduate students involved in this research will receive training in an interdisciplinary field and will gain a broad perspective on mathematical neuroscience,” said Shiau. “My active involvement in student research and course development in these areas will also provide an opportunity to translate this research into compelling educational topics.”
