University of Houston-Clear Lake has hired Shay Davis as the new coordinator of health, wellness and recreation for the university’s Fitness Zone workout facility. |
University recognizes importance of fitness
For University of Houston-Clear Lake’s faculty, staff and students, life can move at a hectic pace. Many students have full-time jobs, families and community obligations to juggle in addition to their course loads while faculty and staff continue to work hard making sure that UH-Clear Lake remains a successful university.
These busy schedules can mean no time for exercise and good health. However, fortunately for students, faculty and staff, UH-Clear Lake offers the Fitness Zone, a workout facility that provides exercise equipment, classes on health and well being, and recreational programs.
“The Fitness Zone is an environment that encourages health, wellness and recreation as well as an opportunity to build community on campus,” explained David A. Rachita, the university’s assistant dean of student life. “Not only does the Fitness Zone provide a convenient outlet to both exercise and de-stress, but it also offers a place for both students and faculty/staff to feel connected to UH-Clear Lake.
“The facility also provides health awareness and recreational programs so members can learn how to care for themselves and have fun.”
With an effort under way to expand the programming of the Fitness Zone, UH-Clear Lake has increased the director’s position from half-time to full-time and hired Shay Davis as the new coordinator of health, wellness and recreation. Davis has more than eight years of experience in the fitness industry and holds a bachelor’s degree in health and sports sciences and a master’s degree in health and kinesiology.
“I’m responsible for ensuring the Fitness Zone helps our community take care of their health, wellness and recreational needs,” said Davis. “In addition to our well-equipped facility, we offer body fat assessments, personal programs, a monthly educational series and various recreational special events that will be held throughout the semester.” Membership to the Fitness Zone is free for currently enrolled, tuition-paying students. Faculty and staff pay just $35 per semester or $90 per year. UH-Clear Lake full-time employees can take part in the Fitness Release Time program where they are able to take time off without a reduction in pay or benefits for up to three hours per week.
Current and potential UH-Clear Lake students, faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by the Fitness Zone located in the Student Services Building, second floor.
“I also want to encourage anyone with ideas or requests related to health, wellness and recreation to let me know,” added Davis. “We want to make sure that the Fitness Zone has the programs that our members want.”
Memberships are available only to students, faculty and staff at this time.
