UH-Clear Lake to honor veterans

In recognition of the service provided by U.S. veterans, the University of Houston-Clear Lake Office of Alumni and Community Relations is hosting a Veterans Day program on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 10:30 a.m. – noon. Veterans, their families and community members are invited to attend this program that will take place in the UH-Clear Lake’s Liberty Park, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

We, as a nation, enjoy and take for granted so many freedoms that many countries cannot even begin to imagine,” says Veterans Day Celebration committee chair and UH-Clear Lake Executive Secretary Cheryl Rohde. “These rights have been ensured to us through the sacrifices made by men and women as far back as the War for Independence.

At UH-Clear Lake, we are unique in that we honor those who are currently serving our country in the military as well as those who have served in the past. All of these men and women have earned the right to be called ‘heroes’ and to be publicly celebrated for their efforts.”

John Kennedy, a veteran and city manager for Nassau Bay, will present “The Call to Serve: What It Means to Be a Veteran.” The Bluebonnet Military Motor Pool will be displaying their vintage military vehicles and equipment while the Clear Lake High School Junior ROTC will provide the honor guard. Photos and stories of veterans and their families will be on display.

We’ve been blessed at UH-Clear Lake to have a great many veterans in our surrounding community; many of them from the aerospace industry, some who are now students and those who are currently serving and coming to our area by way of Ellington Field,” says Rohde. “These men and women deserve thanks and respect from all of us.”

Recognition of the U.S. Army will be represented by the 1st Battle Training Brigade, 75th BCT Division, U.S. Army Reserve. Members of the USO will be hosting refreshments for this special event.

UH-Clear Lake Associate Professor of Legal Studies Jim Benson and UH-Clear Lake alumna and 2003 Alumni Association President Esther Anderson initiated the first Veterans Day celebration at the university in 2003 and collaborated with the university’s Office of Alumni and Community Relations to make the event a success. Since that time, the event has grown to include a number of activities including displays of old photos and other memorabilia, flyovers and much more.

For more information, call the Office of Alumni and Community Relations, 281-283-2024.
