University faculty and staff receive awards

Ninety-eight faculty and staff received Service Awards, while seven were honored with specialty awards during University of Houston-Clear Lake’s 30th Annual Faculty & Staff Awards Presentation in early April. The event included presentations by UH-Clear Lake President William A. Staples, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Carl A. Stockton and Vice President for Administration and Finance Michelle P. Dotter.

During the presentation of the Service Awards, faculty and staff were recognized for five, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service. Those who retired during the past year were also recognized, which included a brief description of the person’s service to the university. Staples announced that the retirees represented more than 127 years of service.

Staples also presented the 2008 Hugh P. Avery Prize – The President’s Distinguished Staff Service Award and the President’s Merit Awards to staff, a staff recognition program that began in 1982. Those receiving the Merit Awards were named first and included Library Technician Jean Grant, Advising Coordinator Ann Hinojosa and Executive Director of Student Financial Aid Lynda McKendree.

"It is an honor to express sincere congratulations and appreciation to each of you," said Staples of the Merit Award winners. "You represent the very best among our staff, and we thank you for your service to UH-Clear Lake."

The Hugh P. Avery Prize – The President’s Distinguished Staff Service Award was awarded to Associate Director of Career and Counseling Services Cindy Cook, who was unable to attend the event.

"She [Cindy Cook] has served as an officer and newsletter editor of Commission VII of the American College Personnel Association and is approved a site visitor for the international association of counseling services," said Staples. "In this role, she evaluates other college and university counseling centers and keeps UH-Clear Lake in the forefront of service delivery to students.

"She is notable for her ability to form positive lasting relationships with a wide range of friends and colleagues. She has the respect and affection of the many individuals whose lives she has touched."

Professor of Finance Grady Perdue received the 2008 President’s Distinguished Service Award. Although Perdue was unable to make the luncheon, Staples described his service both inside and outside of the university.

"From 1996-2005, our honoree was actively involved with the Academy of Financial Services," said Staples. "His leadership commitment to the organization was culminated by serving as president-elect, president and past-president from 2002 through 2005."

The 2008 President’s Distinguished Research Award was presented to Professor of Computer Science Terry Feagin. His research interests include numerical methods, computer graphics, automated fault detection and isolation, software visualization, real-time expert systems, artificial intelligence and fuzzy logic.

"His research has been sponsored by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, IBM, the U.S. Army-Aberdeen Proving Ground, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NASA Johnson Space Center," said Staples.

Professor of Finance Edward Waller received the President’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Waller has been teaching for 22 years including 14 different courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.

"He is perceived as approachable both inside and outside the classroom. His commitment to student development is demonstrated by his 13-year tenure as faculty adviser for the student chapter of the Financial Management Association International’s National Honor Society, and his 10-year tenure as adviser for the Financial Management Association’s student chapter at UH-Clear Lake," said Staples. "Under his leadership, the UH-Clear Lake student chapter has received the superior chapter award from the national organization five times."

The ceremony concluded with Staples congratulating all faculty and staff who had received awards for their work to support the university.
