University friends celebrate art
“Because…Art Matters!” was the theme for a special evening event held by University of Houston-Clear Lake friends and alumni Dr. Terry and Mary Williams in May. UH-Clear Lake Art Task Force member Mary Williams and her husband hosted the “Art Salon” to promote, educate and share the university’s art initiatives.
Musician and UH-Clear Lake alumnus Juan Manuel provided the evening’s entertainment. Guests experienced the Williams’ collection of antique cars, while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, an informal seated dinner and good conversation. University President William A. Staples also spoke, focusing on the importance of access to educational opportunities and how UH-Clear Lake can best serve the community’s needs.
Discussions throughout the evening focused on UH-Clear Lake art programs like the Art School for Children and Young Adults, expansion of exhibitions with community partners like The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake, events like the annual Texas statewide Visual Arts Scholastic Event and development of the international exchange program. Professor of Fine Arts Sandria Hu spoke about a plan for an artist consortium that would offer broad teaching and learning with the community and the reciprocal effect on partner universities abroad.
