More than 1,700 students from around the state gathered at University of Houston-Clear Lake in April for the Texas Art Education Association’s Visual Arts Scholastic Event. While at the event, students not only present their work for competition, but they also get to learn from international artists as well as attend workshops on how to plan for college financially and emotionally. Students receiving Gold Seal (top) awards during the event were honored at a special reception. Pictured (l to r) are VASE State Director Joey Doyle; VASE Gold Seal honoree and Clements High School student Allison Witmer; Nimitz High School student, Gold Seal winner and guest speaker during the Gold Seal Event Emily Hutto; and former Seabrook Mayor Robin Riley. The City of Seabrook assisted by again providing sponsorship to this year’s event. The students are a few of the more than 23,000 who submitted work for 2008 state VASE. Art submissions increased this year, up from more than 16,000 in 2007.
