UH-Clear Lake to hold two writing workshops for teachers
As part of the Greater Houston Area Writing Project, the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s School of Education will host two summer workshops for teachers.
“Calculations, Creatures and Canyons: Writing in the Content Areas,” a five hour, hands on-session is scheduled July 18. The workshop will examine ways to integrate classroom writing into academic discipline areas, as well as identifying model texts for student writing. The activities will help increase the students’ comprehension and provide teachers new ways to assess learning without requiring excessive grading time.
“Gills, Googols, and Glaciers: Writing to Learn in All Subjects,” a five-hour, hands-on workshop slated for July 25, will provide ideas and techniques for integrating writing into the elementary classroom. Discussions will include exploration of trade books for enhancing student learning and writing, as well as an introduction of ways to have students “write short” and “write often” to check for comprehension and to assess learning.
Each workshop provides five hours of CEU credits, and will run 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., and will be held in UH-Clear Lake’s Arbor Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd. Houston. The cost is $50 and includes lunch. For registration assistance, call 281-283-3530, or register online at http://soe.uhcl.edu/Centers/CEP/BackToTheU/ and select GHAWP.
