University of Houston-Clear Lake’s School of Education hosted teachers from schools across the Houston, Galveston, Brazoria, and Fort Bend County areas at a presentation by Poetry Alive, an organization which breathes life into poetry through dramatic and action-filled renditions of popular poems. Pictured are teacher volunteers who joined in on the action of the poem, “Casey at the Bat.” “Fans” look on and cheer from the “benches,” as pitcher Mary Mills of the Clear Creek ISD delivers a pitch to Batter #1, Ava Logans of Houston ISD. Also pictured are Catcher Anita Ross of Poetry Alive, Umpire Bill Bridges of Sam Houston State University; and on deck (against the wall, l to r) are Batter #2 Erin Lynds of Friendswood ISD, and the mighty Casey, Jackie Williams of Somerville ISD. The demonstration was followed by a poetry workshop offering tips on ways to spark elementary students’ interest in the art of verse. Poetry Alive was a featured event of the 24th annual UH-Clear Lake Greater Houston Area Writing Project.
