UH-Clear Lake to present spring literacy workshop in mid-Feburary
Award-winning children’s book author Steven L. Layne will be the featured presenter at the University of Houston-Clear Lake School of Education’s Spring Literacy Workshop Feb 16, 8 a.m. to noon.
Layne, who serves as full time associate professor of education and literature at Judson College in Elgin, Ill, is reputed for dynamic presentations and igniting a passion for reading. His experience spans multiple grade levels in the public schools which gives him a unique camaraderie with teachers and librarians. Layne’s works includes several genres - children’s picture books, poetry, and even sci-fi for young adults. Selective titles are “Love the Baby,” “P is for Princess,” “Life’s Literacy Lessons,” “Mergers” and “This Side of Paradise.”
The literacy workshop is sponsored by the university’s Student Reading Council and the Greater Houston Area Writing Project, which is part of a nationwide initiative to improve the teaching of writing, and thereby improve student writing. The event will be held in the university’s Bayou Theater. It will include breakout sessions presented by area high school, middle school and elementary classroom teachers, and provides four hours professional development credit.
