Speak for yourself

During the past 20 years, UHCL’s Foreign Language Program has evolved from a small initiative offering only three French classes to featuring nine languages, English enhancement courses, kids’ language classes and much more.

Foreign Language Program Director Christine Paul is continually envisioning new ways to build current offerings. Whether it is adding a Lunch ’n’ Learn series, new languages
in the course lineup or specialized classes for international students, the program offers the community myriad continuing education opportunities.

Recently, the program has extended beyond the university campus by taking courses offsite to local elementary schools, such as Clear Creek Independent School District’s Robinson Elementary, and area businesses that encourage employees to expand current linguistic skills.

A new endeavor started with the National Science Foundation Scholar Organization, which offers community college students transferring to UHCL a free workshop focused on improving English communication skills. The initiative has received a UHCL Alumni Association Program Endowment grant to establish a standing class, beginning in fall 2007, for international students.

Tuition fees for foreign language and English enhancement classes range from $135 for new students to $115 for returning students. For more information about Foreign Language Program courses, call 281-283-3033 or visit www.uhcl.edu/fl.
